As with any other holiday, the place where you’ll stay in Madeira will shape your experience on the holiday. It’s very different to stay at a resort, in the Funchal’s city centre, or in a small house in Canhas. I’m not saying one is better than the other – just different.

So, I’ll break down the best places to stay in Madeira, who they are good for, what to expect, and what I would avoid depending on your travel style.

Quick Answer: The Best Places to Stay in Madeira For First-Time Visitors

If this is your first visit, Funchal is probably the best place to stay in Madeira.

It is the easiest base, especially if you do not want to rent a car. You can walk to restaurants, cafés, museums, gardens, the Old Town, the seafront, the marina and many tour meeting points. In fact, even if you’re willing to rent a car, you have good access to everywhere else – most roads in Madeira tend to lead to Funchal.

If you want a quieter stay near Funchal, choose Caniço de Baixo or Garajau.

These are the best options if you still want a central location near the airport and the main roads, but a less bustling environment than Funchal. Caniço is a suburb of Funchal, and most tours also pick up tourists over there. Garajau is a marine reserve, so you’re guaranteed nice waters to swim in.

If you want to come just for adventure or hiking, you may want to stay in other parts of the island. However, I’d only recommend it if you already have several activities booked around a certain place, like levada hikes, canyoning, trekking, etc, and are only interested in exploring the central mountain range.

1. Funchal: Best Place to Stay in Madeira

Best for: first-time visitors, no-car trips, restaurants, tours, nightlife, convenience
Not ideal for: people who want complete silence or remote nature outside the door

For most travellers, Funchal is the best place to stay in Madeira. It is the capital, the main transport hub, the most walkable base, and the easiest place to organise day trips around the island.

This is especially true if you are visiting Madeira without renting a car. Many tours pick up in Funchal or start from central meeting points. You can walk to dinner. You can take buses to nearby areas. There are always Ubers and Bolts. You can join whale-watching tours from the marina, explore the Old Town, visit the Monte Palace and Botanical gardens, and try local food.

Funchal also gives you flexibility. If the weather is bad in the mountains, you can stay in the city. If you wake up tired, you can have a slow day. If you suddenly want to book a tour, you will have more options than in smaller towns. If you want to eat after 9 p.m., you won’t have any trouble finding places that are still open.

The downside is that Funchal is busier and more urban than other parts of Madeira. If your dream is waking up in a silent valley with only birds, clouds and your own existential thoughts, Funchal is not your jam. But for convenience, it is hard to beat.

Best areas to stay in Funchal

Funchal is not one single experience. Where you stay in the city changes the mood of your trip.

Funchal Old Town and City Centre

This is the best place to stay in Madeira if you’d rather walk everywhere or use public transport to get around. (Take my word for it – I lived here for a year without a car.) It’s also a place with plenty of cafés, restaurants, and shops close by, so you can enjoy late night dinners and the promenade.

Local tip: if you are sensitive to noise, check the exact street before booking. Some Old Town streets can be very lively at night, especially near bars and restaurants in Santa Maria. Plus, parking can be hard. If you plan on renting a car, ask if there’s a parking spot available.

Lido and Estrada Monumental

The Lido and Estrada Monumental are the “hotel area”. This is where you’ll find many 5-star hotels, resort-like accommodations with ocean views, sea-water pools, and restaurants. So, if what you’re looking for is an “island getaway”, this is your best bet.

Monte

Monte is technically part of Funchal, but it feels very different from the seafront and city centre. It sits high above the city, with cooler air, views, greenery, several gardens, parks and private churches, plus the famous toboggan rides.

It can be a lovely place to stay if you want peace, wide views, and old word feel. However, I would not recommend Monte for most first-time visitors without a car. While it is beautiful, but you will need plenty of taxis or a car to face those steep roads.

2. Caniço and Garajau: Best Quiet Base Near Funchal

Best for: at least second-time visitors or longer stays (over 3 weeks)
Not ideal for: people who’re staying a short time & don’t want to rent a car

Caniço is a suburb of Funchal where many locals live. Some areas of Caniço, namely in Caniço de Baixo, Reis Magos and Garajau. These are areas near the ocean, with nice ocean views, garden areas, and plenty of apartments and hotels where you can enjoy a calmer pace.

This area is popular with repeat visitors who know they do not need to be in central Funchal every night. It is also good if you are planning to rent a car, because you can reach Funchal, the airport, the east coast and the mountains fairly easily.

The downside is that Caniço and Garajau are not as walkable or lively as Funchal. You will find restaurants and shops, but not the same choice. If you are not renting a car, check bus routes and taxi costs before committing, especially if you’re staying only for a short time.

3. Ponta do Sol: Best for Sunshine and Slow Travel

Best for: sunsets, couples on a romantic holiday, slow travel
Not ideal for: nightlife, no-car travellers who want lots of flexibility

Ponta do Sol is one of the most appealing places to stay on Madeira’s southwest coast. It is known for its good weather all year round, late sunsets and a relaxed village feeling. Lately, it became popular with remote workers, earning the nickname of “nomad village”.

This is a good base if you want a slower holiday. You can swim, walk along the seafront, have dinner with a sunset view and use it as a base for exploring several levadas, including Levada Nova and Levada do Moinho, plus many others in neighbouring Calheta.

However, Ponta do Sol is not as convenient as Funchal if you are relying only on public transport. You can get around, but you will have fewer options and a lot more planning involved. With a car, it becomes much more attractive, but you still need to prepare yourself for steep roads.

4. Calheta: Best for Beach Resorts and West Madeira

Best for: families, beach time, resorts, west coast exploring
Not ideal for: historic atmosphere, nightlife, no-car travellers

Calheta is one of the best places to stay in Madeira if you want beach time and a family-friendly base. It has one of the island’s sandy beaches, a marina, hotels, restaurants and a sunnier west-coast feeling. Overall, this is a good area for families and travellers who want easier beach access.

Madeira is not famous for soft sandy beaches, so Calheta’s imported-sand beach is a practical advantage. It is also useful if you want to explore the west side of the island, including Jardim do Mar, Paul do Mar, Ponta do Pargo, Rabaçal and the Paul da Serra plateau.

But Calheta works best with a rental car. Without one, you may feel limited. Buses are limited and you will not have the same flexibility as in Funchal. Many island tours also start in Funchal, so it will be harder to find transfers to levadas and other highlights.

5. Seixal: Best for Wild North Coast Beauty

Best for: nature lovers, photographers, people who truly want to disconnect, couples
Not ideal for: nightlife, easy transport, first-time no-car visitors

Seixal is one of the most beautiful places to stay on Madeira’s north coast. It has a black sand beach where waterfalls descend from the mountains, complete with dramatic green cliffs to the sides and a natural pool to the back of you.

Seixal is a great choice if you want nature, photography, quiet and access to the north coast. It puts you closer to places like São Vicente, Porto Moniz, Ribeira da Janela, Fanal and Chão da Ribeira. It is also a good base for repeat visitors who want a deeper, moodier Madeira experience.

However, I would not recommend Seixal as a first base if you are not renting a car. Public transport is very limited compared with Funchal, and there are fewer restaurants and shops within walking distance. Also, do not expect guaranteed beach weather just because the south coast is sunny!

6. Chão da Ribeira: Best for Rural Nature

Best for: nature and yoga retreats, silence
Not ideal for: first-time visitors, nightlife, public transport, beach holidays

Further up in Seixal, Chão da Ribeira is not a typical “where to stay in Madeira” recommendation, and that is exactly my the point. It is a rural valley, with restored rustic buildings that were once used by farmers, and a perfect place to disconnect from the whole world.

You’ll wake up to the cold mountain air, and your phone coverage may be spotty. There are no restaurants or cafés to go to: it’s just you and mother nature. Book a small cabin to disconnect, cook for your food, and breathe in clear air. But remember you’ll need a car to get there!

Extra: places in Madeira to avoid

Okay, I’ve mentioned the best places to stay in the Madeira. What about the worst? Where wouldn’t I stay as a visitor to Madeira?

I may get some hate for this, but there are two: Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava. Although they make sense from a logical point of view – Câmara de Lobos for its closeness to Funchal and Ribeira Brava for the ease of reaching different points, including the north coast – they simply aren’t as charming as other places on the island.

Also, I’d avoid areas too far from sea level, especially in Ponta do Sol and Calheta, since that will add more complexity to your travels throughout the island. Always check directions from your accommodation to the places you want to visit before you commit to a hotel or AirBnB.

Final Thoughts: So, Where Should You Stay in Madeira?

If you are still unsure where to stay in Madeira, choose Funchal. It is the best overall base, especially for first-time visitors, short trips and anyone not renting a car. You’ll get walkability, restaurants, tours, transport and enough flexibility to change plans if the weather fails you.

If you want a quieter stay near Funchal with sea views and a resort-like feel, choose Caniço de Baixo or Garajau.

If you want sunshine, sunsets and a slower pace, and don’t mind driving too much, head to Ponta do Sol.

If you want beach access, a family-friendly stay or a good base for exploring levadas, choose Calheta.

If you want wild nature and an opportunity to disconnect preferably with a car, choose either Seixal or Chão da Ribeira.

Madeira is not one-size-fits-all. The island changes quickly from coast to coast, and the best place to stay depends on whether you want convenience, beaches, hiking or swimming, restaurants, or silence.

Pick the base that matches your actual travel style, not the fantasy version of yourself who wakes up at 6 a.m., hikes 18 kilometres, cooks dinner in a remote villa and never once wants a nearby café. That person is impressive. That person may also be fictional.

1. Find Madeira’s best beaches for Free

Best for: lazy afternoons, swimming, low-budget days
Cost: free, unless you go to public sea-water pools

Madeira is not the kind of island with endless golden sand beaches. Most beaches here are pebbly (do bring water shoes!), although there’s the occasional beach with black sand, plus two beaches with sand brought over from Northern Africa in Machico and Calheta.

For a proper beach day, check my list of the best beaches in Madeira, including Reis Magos in Caniço, Prainha in Caniçal, Seixal in the north coast, Ponta do Sol and Calheta on the southwest. All of these have plenty of space and are completely free.

There are also public sea-water pools in Madeira, some of which also have direct ocean access. However, these are paid. Frente Mar Funchal (Lido, Ponta Gorda, Barreirinha, Doca do Cavacas) have an entry fee of 6€ – but it’s cheaper if you buy a 5, 20 or 30-entry pass. The public pools in Porto da Cruz cost 1.5€/adult or 0.75/child.

2. Swim In Porto Moniz’s Free Volcanic Natural Pools

Best for: an afternoon away in Porto Moniz, ending a day of island exploring

Porto Moniz is famous for its natural volcanic swimming pools and a must-see for anyone visiting Madeira. The main complex has an entry fee of 3€ and it has lifeguards, changing rooms, and modern facilities. The older one, which is also “wilder”, with rugged pools, is free.

I don’t recommend the older pools for people visiting with children. For them, the newer complex is safer and more pleasant. However, if you’re a confident swimmer and have water shoes, this feels like another world. Also, since the volcanic rocks heat up in the sun, the water is surprisingly warm.

3. Walk Around Funchal Old Town

Best for: first-time visitors, photography and history enthusiasts, food stops
Cost: free if self-guided; paid if you book a walking tour

Funchal’s Old Town is one of the best places to explore in Madeira without spending money. You can wander through Rua de Santa Maria, look at the painted doors, visit little squares, hit the Farmer’s Market, peek into churches and slowly take in the atmosphere.

This is a good first-day activity because Funchal gives you the island in miniature: history, wine and sugar trade, lush gardens, tourism, old buildings and cafés where you can see humans shaped the island over time.

You can absolutely do it for free. Just walk around and pay attention to the historical clues (my One Week in Madeira ebook includes a one-day tour of Funchal). However, if you’d rather take a tour, you can book the Funchal Old Town Walking Tour with University students.

4. Visit Funchal’s Free Gardens and Parks

Best for: slow mornings, shade for the hotter hours

Madeira used to be botanical garden with roads. As more and more houses (and hotels) are built, that feeling is fading away. These days, most people focus on the Botanical Gardens (10€) and Monte Palace (18€) in Funchal, which are lush and definitely worth a visit.

However, if you really want to travel low-cost, there are plenty of free gardens and parks. Just in Funchal, you have the Santa Catarina Park, with views over the Funchal Bay; the Municipal Garden, with plenty of trees and flowers; the Monte garden uphill, and the Lido Promenade.

These are not the island’s grandest gardens, but that is the point. They are easy, free and perfect for a budget-friendly day in Funchal. In the outskirts of Funchal, you can visit Quinta Splendida in Caniço, which is also a hotel.

5. Take the Garajau Cable Car to the Beach (and Perhaps Splurge on Snorkeling)

Best for: cheap cable car ride, sea views, swimming and snorkelling
Cost: low-cost cable car; beach/viewpoint free

If the Funchal-Monte Cable Car feels too expensive, Garajau’s cable car near Cristo-Rei is a budget-friendly cousin with sea views, plus an amazing beach day at the end. The roundtrip costs 3€, and Garajau’s crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and diving.

The ride itself is short and scenic. But you really want to the cherry on top of the cake – and if you’re into that kind of thing – you can book a tour and snorkel at the Garajau Marine Reserve. This is one of the best experiences in Madeira, so I’d definitely recommend if the weather is nice and the ocean is calm.

Finally, you can also visit the Cristo Rei statue and walk down the steps towards the viewpoint.

6. Walk From Funchal to Câmara de Lobos by the Seaside

Best for: sea views, budget exercise, sunset

If you want a free activity in Madeira that still feels like you have done something, walk part of the coastal route between Funchal and Câmara de Lobos. You can start around Lido or in Praia Formosa and follow the promenade west.

This route gives you ocean views, cliffs, beaches, tunnels, and that steady Atlantic soundtrack that makes even a normal walk feel a little more cinematic. At the end, the centre of Câmara de Lobos itself is colourful and photogenic, with tiny fishing boats and plenty of bars.

7. Visit the Farmers’ Market Without Buying the Expensive Fruit

Best for: colour, photos, trying new fruits, local atmosphere
Cost: free to enter; not always cheap to shop

Mercado dos Lavradores is one of the most famous places to visit in Funchal. It is colourful, central and full of flowers, fruit, and fresh fish. I definitely recommend you go, but you must keep your eyes open. The Farmer’s Market has some of the worst tourist traps in Madeira.

The fruit stalls can be expensive, especially in the more tourist-facing areas. If someone offers you ten samples, take them and taste the fruit, but don’t buy it without asking for the price first. Last year, someone went viral for spending 70€ for just three pieces of fruit!

Still, the market is worth a visit. Go early if you want to see the fish market properly, and combine it with a walk around the Old Town. Also, if you visit on a Friday or Saturday, there are local farmers you can buy directly to – and those prices are fair.

8. Chase Free Viewpoints, Not Expensive Attractions

Best for: photography, road trips, low-budget exploring
Cost: free, if you can get there

Some of Madeira’s best attractions are viewpoints, and many of them are free. This is excellent news if your budget is fragile but your camera roll is ambitious.

In and around Funchal, try Pico dos Barcelos for a big city view. In Caniço, the Cristo Rei in Garajau viewpoint overlooks dramatic cliffs and Atlantic blue. If you have access to a car or are joining a tour, I recommend viewpoints like Eira do Serrado, Bica da Cana, Miradouro do Guindaste and Ponta do Rosto can be spectacular.

The only catch is transport. Free viewpoints are only truly free if you can reach them easily. If you are not renting a car, it may be cheaper and easier to book a half-day tour that links several viewpoints instead of paying for multiple taxis.

Extra tip: Build a Cheap Madeira Day Around One Paid Activity

The best way to enjoy Madeira on a budget is not necessarily to avoid paying for everything. It is to choose carefully. Pick one paid activity per day and then build free things around it. For example:

• Snorkel in Garajau, take the Garajau Cable Car, then spend time at the beach and Cristo Rei viewpoint.

• Book a Funchal walking tour, then explore the Old Town, the Farmer’s Market, the Municipal Garden and Santa Catarina Park for free.

• Pay for the ticket to Monte Palace, then wander Monte Municipal Park and take the bus back down.

• Look for public transport options near your accommodation and choose a few levadas you can reach using buses.

So, What Are the Best Cheap Things to Do in Madeira?

For completely free things to do in Madeira, start with beaches, viewpoints, Funchal’s gardens, the Old Town, coastal promenades, Seixal and the free natural pools in Porto Moniz. For me, nothing’s better than going to the beach and watching the sunset with a Brisa by my side.

If you have a small budget, choose activities that add real value: a guided walking tour in Funchal, a wine tasting or a cultural experience, a hiking transfer that solves a transport problem, snorkelling in Garajau or a few key gardens. I’d say invest in experiences more than anything else.

Speaking of experiences, check the cheap eats in Funchal for a budget-friendly, real taste of the local food. And one final tip: if you don’t have a car, focus on activities that are walkable, reachable by bus, or easy to combine with a short organised tour. This will save you money and spare you from building a holiday around rural bus timetables, which is nobody’s idea of romance.

Madeira does not have to be overly expensive. To do Madeira on a budget, the trick is knowing when to pay and when to just let the island do its thing for free. After all, a sunset does not require a booking reference!

Although the boat can feel a little cramped, it’s great if you want something memorable but not too physically demanding. You get the thrill of wildlife, the views of the coastline, and get another perspective about life out in the ocean: so it’s definitely one of the best activities in Madeira.

Pro tip: take a light jacket, even in summer. The sea breeze has opinions. I personally prefer to have a very light breakfast and go out in the morning.

If you’re actively avoiding renting a car, Funchal is your best base in Madeira. And while some people don’t seem too keen on staying “in the city” for a “nature holiday”, I always recommend they take a tour of Funchal – because the history of the city and the island’s are the same.

This guided walking tour of Funchal takes you through the Old Town, the cathedral area, the market, historic streets, churches, and those little corners you might pass without realising they have five centuries of gossip attached to them.

In my opinion, it’s a very good first-day activity. In my one week in Madeira guide, I dedicate the first day to Funchal because I think it sets the tone. You’ll learn a little about the history of the sugar and the wine trade, the challenges, and how the island functioned for centuries.

But it is also a nice choice if you have already done the big viewpoints and want a slower morning in Funchal. The tour takes around 2 hours and it’s available in English, French, and German. Plus, the proceeds go entirely to University of Madeira students.

3. Madeira Skywalk, Porto Moniz, Seixal and Fanal Tour

Cabo Girão gives you the big glass-platform drama. Fanal brings ancient laurel forest and misty tree-wizard energy. Seixal hides one of the few sand beaches on the island. And, just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Porto Moniz awards you natural lava pools.

That is a lot of Madeira without having to deal with driving on mountain roads, parking, or deciding whether the GPS is sending you into someone’s banana plantation. Please take into consideration the tour does not include the Cabo Girão and swimming pools entry fee.

Again, this is a self-guided tour. You should be realistic about your fitness, comfort with heights, and ability to follow a tough mountain route. Also, manage expectations. Sunrise at Pico do Areeiro is popular, so you may not be there all alone by yourself.

Still worth it? I’d say yes. One of the best activities in Madeira? Possibly. But I also won’t lie to you. You need to be fit, patient, and okay with sharing the scenery with other people (so, no, not a good place to propose to someone!).

Forget the 4×4. Forget the buggy. If you’re an adrenaline junkie looking for a thrill ride, this is it. This tour combines jeep sightseeing and a visit to the volcanic pools with (optional) adrenaline activities, such as a zipline or giant swing over the Atlantic. It will get your heart pumping.

Because they are optional, the zipline and swing will be paid for separately. Also, full disclosure, the weather can also affect whether these activities remain an option. However, Madeira tends to be generous with adventurous travellers.

Looking for the path less travelled? Levada do Rei is a lovely, lush route in the São Jorge area that deserves more attention, but perhaps not too much attention, because then we’d ruin it. Classic Madeira dilemma.

The transfer makes it easier if you do not want to drive to the north of the island. The hike itself is usually self-guided, so check the details before booking. Again, you should also book the hike using SIMplifica.

It is a good option if you have already done one of the big-name hikes, or if you want something beautiful but slightly more off the beaten path.

Honourable Mention: Alecrim and Lagoa do Vento Nature Experience

Best for: nature lovers, hikers, repeat visitors

If you want another beautiful levada option, look at the Alecrim and Lagoa do Vento experience. It offers flexible scheduling, route support, maps/GPX, and transport. Again, check the trail fee before booking. Madeira’s nature is wild. The payment system is less wild, but still not something you want to discover five minutes before the hike.

So, which Madeira activity should you book?

All of them! They’re the best activities in Madeira.

Just kidding. If it is your first time in Madeira and you do not have a car, book any of the west/northwest tours covering the Skywalk, Fanal, Seixal, and Porto Moniz. This combo gives you a lot of the island in one day, and you’ll get a taste for the whole island. You only need to choose the level of adrenaline you’re seeking.

And of course, you must do at least one levada. The island makes more sense when you walk beside water, under green shade, listening to birds and wondering how anyone built these channels without modern machinery.

Other than that, if you want something easy and memorable, do the whale and dolphin watching tour, especially in summer. For more cultural activities, start with the Funchal Old Town walking tour.

So, all things considered, you may need to book several of these! I certainly hope so, and I hope you enjoy the best Madeira has to offer. And one final pro tip: bring layers, check what is included, pay any required trail fees in advance, and never underestimate distances.

The weather is warm but not too hot, so you can hike comfortably, stroll around the villages, and maybe even make time for a beach day. So here’s what you should expect for May in Madeira!

1.Attend a festival in Madeira

There’s no better way to discover local culture than attending an arraial or festival. And if you’re coming to Madeira in May, there’s plenty to choose from:

🌸 Festa da Flor in Funchal, Ongoing

If you’re visiting in May, chances are you’ve already seen photos of the Festa da Flor. Despite what you may have seen, the main action is packed into a couple of parades (“cortejo” in Portuguese) where several community ensembles dance their away down the avenue.

However, there’s also a permanent flower and food market at Almirante Reis, where you can find fresh, hot-out-of-plate bolo do caco, sandwiches, poncha and other drinks, sweets and cane sugar syrup, seeds, flowers and fruits.

Nearby, there’s the Exposição da Flor showcasing award-winning orchids, cacti and succulents, birds of paradise, and other local flowers. Plus, you’ll see flower carpets and installations pop up here and there. If you’re lucky, you may even help making one.

🎶 Calheta Sounds Cool, Paúl do Mar, May 2nd

Calheta Sounds Cool is world music concert in Paul do Mar, by the beach, from 17:00 to 02:00. The idea is to just let the good vibes flow from late afternoon until the wee hours. Tickets cost 10€ but the revenue goes completely to local schools.

Paul do Mar is precisely the kind of place where you go for “just one drink” and end up staying for the whole evening. If you’re not on the island on the 2nd of May, I recommend going to Maktub in Paul do Mar for live music, mojitos, and perfect sunset light.

🎵 Aqui Acolá Festival in Ponta do Sol, May 14th-17th

Ponta do Sol is known as the nomad village, but its artsy vibe is nothing new. Festival Aqui Acolá celebrates art, culture and tradition with concerts, exhibits, workshops, dance, theatre and other open-air performances. You can check this year’s line up here.

There’s no strict schedule you need to follow. You just show up, walk around, and something interesting will happen. Usually concerts are the big highlight, and a great opportunity for you to enjoy the culture without understanding the language.

🧅 Festa da Cebola in Caniço, May 15th-17th

This one actually translates as “Onion Festival” and it delivers. Madeira’s onion producers show off the best they got in a two-day festival with a parade, folk concerts, and a lot of community involvement. It’s not flashy, but it’s real!

🚗 Madeira Classic Car Revival in Funchal, May 22nd-24th

Funchal retains a lot of old school charm, but nothing plays to it quite as well as Madeira Classic Car Revival. There are cars going back to the late 19th century, as well as uncommon models you’ve probably never seen in your life.

Even if you’re not particularly into cars, it’s surprisingly enjoyable. And if you’re really feeling committed to the vintage style, there’s also the Concurso Vestir à Época, where people dress to match the era of the cars.

👑 Monte do Imperador in Funchal, May 23rd

Monte do Imperador is an event that flies under the radar. It takes place in the historical centre of Monte, at Largo da Fonte and Parque Dias Leite Monteiro. It takes its name after Emperor Charles I of Austria, who died in Monte in 1922.

Attendees dress in early 20th century attire and the city council tries to recreate that vintage environment. If you’re already planning to visit Monte (you should), take a peak. Otherwise, if you’re into history and cosplay, it may also be of interest.

🎉 Arraial das Casas do Povo in Funchal, 28th-29th May

Arraial das Casas do Povo is absolutely peak local Madeira. Each parish on the island has its own “casa do povo”, or community centre, and most of them will be represented at this event at Funchal’s pier 8 (the promenade).

Expect a lot of grilled food, live music with accordions, folk music where people diss at each other (despique), dancing, and a lot of people who all seem to know each other. It’s made by locals for locals, so just grab a drink and blend in.

2. Test your limits in Porto Santo

In May, Porto Santo hosts two very demanding sports events. The first is Porto Santo Nature trail, from May 16th-17th, which takes through Porto Santo’s different landscapes. If you like to run, it’s a perfect setting to challenge yourself.

Then there’s MIUS, Madeira Island Ultra Swim, from May 23rd and 24th. It’s an open-water swimming event where you can choose to swim 1.500, 3.000, 5.000, 7.500 or 10.000 kms in Porto Santo’s clear, unpoluted waters.

3.Swim in Natural Pools

I won’t promise you beach weather in May. Madeira tends to have a late Summer, so May is pleasant but the water temp is still on the cooler side, from 19ºC to 20ºC. However, pools may feel warmer. Plus, the crowds aren’t quite at Summer levels yet.

Apart from the Porto Moniz natural swimming pools, which I cannot recommend more, there is also a natural pool in Seixal and Docas do Cavacas in Funchal. If you’re trying to decide where to go, just check what the weather looks like on the webcams.

4.Escape for a Day

If you really want to get away from it all, there are a couple of hidden gems you can easily explore now with the warmer weather. If you’re not afraid of heights, there’s Fajã dos Padres, below Cabo Girão, which is only accessible by cable car or private boat.

Another one is Calhau da Lapa (pictured), below Campanário in Ribeira Brava. You need take a steep hike for roughly 20 minutes to reach the bitch, so make sure you have comfortable shoes. The alternative is, once again, using a private boat.

5.Spend a Day in Porto Santo

If you have the time, go. Check the weather forecast before going. If it’s not raining or cloudy, May is already game. It’s warm enough to swim, quiet enough to enjoy. You get a completely different side of Madeira, flatter, slower, and very beach-focused.

6. Go Dolphin Watching

There are dolphins are year-round in Madeira, but the warmer waters bring more variety. From April to October, you may spot different types of dolphins. And since the ocean is not as choppy now, this is definitely something you should sign up for.

So, What Is Madeira Like in May?

Busy, but not chaotic. There’s always something happening, and nature doesn’t meddle with your plans as much. You can dip in and out of festivals, or ignore them completely and go hiking. Now that’s a nice balance!

However, Madeira can be a surprisingly gay-friendly place where LGBTQ+ travellers are likely to feel… just like any other tourist. Let’s break it down: what you can expect, where to stay, gay bars in Madeira, and if it’s the right fit your next holiday.

I absolutely loved the videos “In the Mood For…” made in Madeira. It’s rare that someone captures the feel of the island so well without overhyping it. And they travelled as a couple!

Is Portugal gay-friendly?

Portugal is one of the most progressive countries in Europe when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights, with strong legal protections against discrimination. But I won’t lie to you. Conservative attitudes do exist, and Madeira is still more religious than the mainland.

That said, locals tend to be polite, low-key, and mind their own business. I personally know a gay couple living in a very rural area of the island, and no one bats an eye. It’s simply understood and quietly acknowledged, without ever talking openly about it.

For trans and non-binary travellers, the atmosphere is also generally polite and practical in hotels, restaurants, or other tourist-facing businesses. Experiences vary depending on how visibly gender-nonconforming you are and where you are on the island, but do not expect violent confrontations or harassment.

Both as a tourist and a local, you’re very unlikely to face hostility. Interactions will usually remain friendly and discreet, with no personal questions asked. In other words, you’ll get the same treatment as every other tourist who’s come here.

Public Displays of Affection and Social Norms

In all my time in Madeira, I’ve only seen two things that made locals mad at tourists: nudity and trying to save parking spaces. You should know there’s no official nudist beach on the island, and people here don’t love it when foreigners test their sense of propriety.

Public displays of affection, whether between same-sex or opposite-sex couples, tend to be subtle. Holding hands on the street is absolutely fine. A quick smooch is unlikely to draw attention. More than that will start to feel odd, since Madeirans don’t do it themselves.

Is there an LGBTQ+ Scene in Madeira?

Madeira has a small LGBTQ+ scene, mostly centred around Funchal. It’s not extensive, but there are regular drag shows and a few friendly venues. Here are some bars, discos, and events that you may want to check out:

• GPoint: it used to be a gay bar. These days, it feels more gay-friendly than a proper gay bar. Things get a little more interesting on karaoke nights (Wednesdays and Sundays). Otherwise, football may be on.

• Lust Vintage: I’m still on the fence trying to decide if this one is pink washing or not, because it belongs to a larger enterprise. However, they have a drag show every Friday and other themed events, and it’s currently the most gay-crowded bar in Funchal.

• Böate Funchal: it’s a part of the same group as Lust Vintage. They focus on “vintage hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s” and a disco bar with world music. They occasionally host drag nights and different DJ sets.

• Barreirinha Bar Café: not a gay bar, but definitely queer-friendly. They organise indie concerts, workshops and other communal activities. But, most importantly, they host the Chakras Drag Show once a month.
  
  

• Sáficas Madeira: this is a new, women-led collective that organises events that are open to all LGBTQ+ people. Past events include picnics, hikes, games, karaoke night, bowling and sports events. Check their Meet Up or Instagram to see current events.

• Madeira Pride: there’s an annual, small pride parade, usually in October (outside of Pride Month, which isn’t really a thing here.) Check out their instagram page to know about LGBTQ+ events on the island.
  
  

Nudist and/or Gay beaches in Madeira

Whenever I meet tourists, I get this question a lot: are they gay beaches in Madeira? Are there nude beaches in Madeira?

Well, no. There are no official nude beaches in Madeira. However, the Atalaia beach in Caniço is known to be nudist-friendly. Praia da Canavieira, also in Caniço, was historically gay-friendly and some even say it was a cruising area, but these days its access is compromised.

Are there LGBTQ+-Friendly Hotels in Madeira?

Madeira doesn’t really have hotels that cater only to LGBTQ tourists like Madrid, Barcelona, or Berlin. There are some hotels well-known for their inclusive atmosphere – not that I think you’ll have trouble if you stay anywhere else.

• NEXT – Savoy Signature: it’s openly LGBTQ friendly, and it’s centrally located in Funchal.
  
  

• Savoy Saccharum Resort: a stylish, design-focused hotel with a relaxed atmosphere by the seaside in Calheta.

• Quinta da Casa Branca: a boutique hotel, surrounded by a garden. Interestingly, it’s featured on the “In the Mood For…” video I posted above.

• The Vine Hotel: one of the most design-forward hotels in Funchal, with a rooftop pool and a more cosmopolitan feel.

• Savoy Palace: a larger luxury option with broad appeal where LGBTQ+ travellers will feel welcomed.

When in doubt, you can also use the “Travel Proud” filter on Booking.com. Before publishing this post, I personally checked and there are over 100 properties in Funchal alone matching that filter, and around 250 across the island.

Some LGBTQ+-Friendly Cafés and Restaurants in Madeira

Most cafés and restaurants in Madeira are welcoming. As a rule of thumb for all of Portugal, more modern, vegetarian or health-focused places tend to feel especially inclusive. In Funchal, there’s Fala Fala, Museu Café, Terra Food Concept, Avista and, of course, Barreirinha.

Is Madeira Safe for lBGTQ travellers?

Madeira is considered a very safe destination overall, and this extends to LGBTQ+ travellers. Violence or harassment are rare, and I don’t remember a single instance where someone was physically attacked for their sexual orientation or gender expression. The same can’t be said for Porto or Lisbon.

That said, exercise caution like you would anywhere else. It’s close to paradise, but not paradise yet.

Should LGBTQ+ couples and Travellers Visit Madeira?

If you like nature, history and hiking, yes. The island offers a relaxed pace, great food, a strong sense of safety, and it’s unlikely you’ll run into any problems travelling as a couple. I speak from experience here!

If you’re single and looking for a vibrant queer nightlife or a huge pride event where you might meet someone… then maybe not. In that case, Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona or even the Canary Islands maybe be a better fit 😉

That said, it is not something to do blindly.

Madeira is not an easy place to drive. Roads can be steep, narrow and unpredictable. On top of that, car rental policies can vary a lot, and not all companies offer the same level of service.

As you may guess, locals don’t often have to rent. My goal here is to help you make an informed decision, calculate how much it will cost you, and find a reliable car rental in Madeira.

First, Should You Rent a Car in Madeira?

You should rent a car in Madeira if:

• You’re comfortable driving on steep, winding roads

• You want to explore beyond Funchal and reach remote areas

• You’re staying outside Funchal (then, it’s absolutely a must)

• You’re travelling with others and can split the cost of renting a car

• You prefer flexibility over guided tours to visit Madeira

You should not rent a car if:

• You feel unsure about driving in unknown, mountainous roads

• You only want to visit the main highlights with guided tours

• You’re staying mostly in Funchal, and only making a few day trips

• You’re travelling solo on a tight budget

• You’re happy joining group tours or shared transport

How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Car in Madeira?

Car rental prices in Madeira vary a lot depending on the season, how far in advance you book, the type of car you choose and whether you need an automatic car.

The cheapest daily rates on Uber Car Hires in Madeira start at around €19 per day in low season. But that usually applies to small, manual cars collected at the airport.

In spring and summer, prices can rise quickly. As a rough guideline, expect these prices for car rentals in Madeira:

• Low season: from around €19 to €35 per day

• Mid season: often around €35 to €50 per day

• High season: often €40 to €90 per day (automatic and larger vehicles are on the higher end of the scale)

Plus, you need to factor in insurance upgrades, deposit, extra driver fees (sometimes), out of hours pick up charges (sometimes), and fuel fees.

Best Rent-a-Cars in Madeira Without a Deposit

Again, I want to make one thing clear: I’m not endorsing any car rentals in Madeira. I do not earn any commission, and I do not have a commercial relationship with any of these businesses.

However, if you spend any time reading reviews on Booking and other large platforms, you will quickly notice that many of the best-known rental companies also attract a surprising number of bad reviews.

Complaints usually revolve around deposits, insurance, unexpected charges or stressful pick-up experiences. On the other hand, local rent-a-cars in Madeira have much better reviews.

Local companies often seem to offer a smoother experience, especially when it comes to flexibility, communication and deposits. Here are some rent a cars in Madeira that seem to be reliable:

AutoCanhas

AutoCanhas has no deposit fees and accepts payment on pick-up by cash, debit card or credit card. It also advertises airport delivery, with fees depending on rental length. Autocanhas currently has a 4.5 rating on Google Maps, and has several locations throughout the island.

Carwave

Another local rent a car in Madeira, Carwave says clearly on their website that they ask for no deposit, as long as you take full insurance. No credit card is needed, and they currently have an impressive 5 stars on Google Maps (with over 600 reviews) and 4.6 on Trustpilot (26 reviews).

Stone Rent a Car

Stone is another car rental who advertises no deposit or credit card needed, since payment can be made on delivery by card or cash. The head office ranks an impressive 5 stars on Google Maps with over 1300 reviews, and it’s often mentioned on travel forums.

Madpoint

Madpoint seems like another good option, with very good reviews (4.8 on Google Maps with 600 reviews), but it does require a deposit if you’re only taking out basic insurance. I’ve seen it mentioned on Reddit /Madeira several times with positive reviews, so it’s worth checking out.

Automatic-only option

If you only drive automatic, it is worth knowing that Automatic Rental Cars Madeira specialises in automatic vehicles only. You have to pay a security deposit if you only take out basic insurance, but they waiver it with premium insurance.

A Note on Deposits when renting a car in Madeira

Deposits are one of the biggest pain points when renting a car. Some companies require a large credit card hold or cash deposits. If something feels excessive, walk away. There are many rental companies in Madeira, and you have options.

Policies, insurance terms and deposit rules can change at any time, so always check the company’s own website before booking rather than relying only on third-party platforms or older reviews.

which type of car should you rent in Madeira?

Avoid the cheapest option

Let’s put it this way: I don’t know a single local who owns a Fiat Panda. Whenever we see one, we know it’s a rental. So here’s your first tip: avoid the smallest, cheapest car available.

If you plan to visit places like Pico do Arieiro, Fanal, or mountain viewpoints, you want at least a group B car or equivalent to travel comfortably.

Manual Gear Vs Automatic

As elsewhere in Europe, manual cars are more common and cheaper. But if you’re used to automatic, rent automatic. Most rental cars have a few options available, especially if you rent beforehand.

Driving in Madeira already requires focus. Adding manual gear shifting on steep inclines can quickly become stressful if you’re not used to it. Plus, you may need to practice engine braking as well.

Driving Tips in Madeira

Don’t trust Google Maps blindly

When driving in Madeira, use your common sense instead of following GPS, Google Maps or Apple Maps blindly. Google Maps may suggest roads that are quite narrow or very steep just to “save” a couple of minutes, while Apple Maps is completely outdated.

Take photos of the car

Before driving out with your car, photograph all scratches and dents, check fuel level, and report anything suspicious to the car rental staff. This avoids any issues when returning the car.

Be patient

With the current influx of tourists, each renting their own car, there are traffic jams in Pico Ruivo, Ponta de S. Lourenço, Funchal, Caniço, and even between Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol.

The alternative is driving through the old roads, but I don’t recommend it for those who’re not familiar with it. So, be patient, and wait on the main road before choosing (literally) the road less travelled.

Prepare for parking

Parking is limited, so you’d do well to look up a parking spot before you arrive to your final location. If you’re doing a levada or visiting a popular spot, you may need to park a little further away.

But don’t stress over things like parking! You’re on holidays and NOT on a schedule. Another tip: keep some coins around, because they come in handy when you need to pay for your parking spot.

Expect changing weather

The weather in Madeira can change suddenly. It won’t always be bright and sunny. In fact, just going from the seaside to the mountains will come with a temperature drop, fog, and more humidity.

Take this into consideration when you pack (bring layers!), but also when you drive. If you feel uncomfortable as the weather changes, turn back. Don’t risk it, especially if you’re not driving on the Via Rápida.

Plan Before You Rent a Car

A car is one of the biggest expenses of your trip. Instead of renting for your entire stay, plan your itinerary first and rent only for those days. You can optimise your stay to need it only for 2-3 days.

Unless, of course, you’re staying outside of Funchal and Câmara de Lobos. In smaller cities, even if you’re paying less for your accommodation, you’ll likely need a car even just to go to the supermarket.

Renting a Car in Madeira: yes, but With caveats

Renting a car in Madeira can be one of the best decisions you make, or one of the most stressful. Choose the right company, pick a car you’re comfortable with, and use Google Maps to know what to expect when you finally get to driving.

If you plan your itinerary, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the island at your own pace. But, if you’re not comfortable driving, there are always tours, transfers, and other ways to experience Madeira without the stress of driving.

The island’s cuisine is deceptively simple. It focus on simple ingredients that are available all year round thanks to the mild climate, and heavily relies on “new world” ingredients such as sweet potato, corn, chili peppers, avocado, and passion fruit.

Here are some traditional Madeira foods and drinks that you must try during your trip!

Madeira Bread and Starters

Bolo do Caco

Bolo do caco is Madeira’s iconic bread. This soft flatbread with sweet potato was traditionally cooked on a hot basalt stone (“a caco”), which gives it its name.

It is usually served warm with garlic butter and parsley, but it also appears in sandwiches filled with steak, tuna or pork. You can find it at almost any restaurant, although it’s famous at O Polar and O Lagar in Câmara de Lobos. I also recommend the bolo do caco stand at Santo da Serra.

Lapas

Lapas are limpets collected from Madeira’s rocky coastline. They are typically grilled with garlic, butter and lemon and served sizzling in a hot pan.

This seafood starter is extremely popular in coastal restaurants and is usually eaten with pieces of bread to soak up the sauce. However, you should know fishing limpets has been forbidden for a few months now. So, this year, most limpets here actually come from the Azores.

Lupins, Olives, Peanuts

For us, Portuguese people, lupins don’t even register as anything worth mentioning. It wasn’t until a couple of American friends, who had never tasted them, that I noticed it could be “exotic”.

In Madeira, drinks often come with a side (“dentinho”), which is usually seasoned lupins, olives, or peanuts. Sometimes, they’re even spicy! If you’re always served peanuts, look for a little bags of lupins at the supermarket – just make sure they are temperados.

Sopa de Tomate e Cebola

Portuguese cuisine is big on soups, but in Madeira you won’t find the traditional caldo verde o vegetable purées. Instead, soups here tend to be much heartier.

My favourite is the tomato soup, made with onions, garlic and poached egg. It’s frequently found in traditional cafés, including some that I recommended in my previous article cheap eats in Funchal. Bela 5 always has it on the menu and it’s pretty good.

Sopa de Trigo

Another hearty soup is “sopa de trigo”, a rustic dish made with wheat, vegetables and pork, and sometimes beans and sweet potato too. It’s actually not too dissimilar from the farro soup you’ll find in Tuscany.

Sopa de trigo was usually a whole meal for farm workers in the North of the island. These days you can find it all over, but it’s especially popular in the wintertime. There’s always a sopa de trigo stand in the mockup village at the Christmas Market.

Canja

Every country has its own version of chicken soup. In Portugal, it’s canja. However, Madeirans sometimes cook it with rice (in the mainland, pasta is used instead) and they serve it in mugs. O Abrigo do Pastorserves it like this all year around.

Seafood and Fish Dishes in Madeira

Filete de Espada

Black scabbardfish is one of Madeira’s most distinctive ingredients. It can either be grilled (espada grelhado) ou fried with a little tempura (espada frito), served with fries, boiled potatoes or vegetables.

Some restaurants serve scabbardfish with fried banana or variations with passion fruit sauce. However, I must warn you this is a tourist trap – no Madeiran cooks like this at home.

Atum em Molho Vilão

Because tuna is abundant in the surrounding Atlantic waters, it is one of the most common fish dishes in local restaurants. It’s served in a number of ways, including tuna steak (bife de atum), grilled with garlic and herbs, or with molho vilão/ vilhão.

This sauce uses onions, garlic, laurel, summer savoury, oregano, paprika, olive oil and vinegar in copious amounts. It covers the whole tuna, which is then served with potatoes or milho frito. You can find this and other fish in molho vilão, such as cavala (mackerel), in daily specials.

Polvo

Octopus (polvo) is frequently served boiled and grilled across Madeira and Porto Santo. It is usually accompanied by potatoes and seasoned with olive oil and garlic (“polvo à lagareiro”).

In Madeira, you can try polvo in A Tendinha (as daily special), Taberna Madeira, or at Só Espeto (Gaula, Santa Cruz). In Porto Santo, I recommend O Torres and Teodorico, plus the octopus sandwich at Bar do Henrique.

Fragateira

Fragateira is a traditional fish stew made with several types of fish, limps, tomatoes, onions and herbs. It reflects Madeira’s strong fishing heritage. It’s hard to come by this stew in Funchal, but you’ll see it in other parts of the island. I recommend A Pipa in Porto da Cruz.

Traditional Meat Dishes in Madeira

Picado

Picado is a popular snack-bar dish. Small pieces of beef are cooked in gravy and served with a generous portion of fries. It’s usually shared between friends, so you can order small, medium or a larger size.

Most picados use beef, but there are variations with chicken, pork, and even octopus or fried scabbard fish. Popular picado spots include Beer Garden in Funchal (I only recommend the traditional beef version), O Polar in Câmara de Lobos, O Faísca in Ribeiro Frio, and Adega do Pomar in Camacha.

Espetada

Madeiran’s favourite Madeiran dish. Espetada consists in large meat skewers seasoned with garlic and grilled on a laurel stick. This is what people cook on the outdoor barbecues you see on most picnic areas.

Espetada is usually served with milho frito, bolo do caco, and salad. Most restaurants these days use metal skewers due to food safety rules, including the famous Talho do Caniço and O Polar in Câmara de Lobos, both known for their tender meats.

Carne de Vinha d’Alhos

This traditional pork dish is marinated for several days in white wine, vinegar, garlic and bay leaf. It has a strong smell and an acidic taste, so it’s quite distinctive from other dishes. It is also, surprise, surprise, Madeira’s traditional Christmas dishes.

Around Christmas time, you can find “sandes de carne de vinha d’alhos” in most snack-bars in the old town. It’s also sold at several food stands during Noite do Mercado (December 23rd). During the rest of the year, keep an eye out for “há sandes de vinha d’alhos”. Outside of the city centre, try Bar Os Castrinhos in Funchal.

Milho Frito

Milho frito is one of foods you must try in Madeira. It’s fried cornmeal – almost like fried polenta, but better. The cornmeal is cooked with herbs and then deep fried, resulting in a crispy outside and a soft, savoury inside. It goes perfectly with grilled fish.

Desserts and Sweet Treats

Bolo de Mel

Bolo de mel is Madeira’s traditional molasses cake. It is made with sugar cane molasses, spices and nuts and has a dense, rich flavour. The cake is traditionally prepared around Christmas and New Year, but can be found throughout the year.

You can buy bolo de mel at Fábrica de Sto. António or Chábom (only during Christmastime). Alternatively, you can find bolo de mel from Ilhopan in all supermarkets.

Broas de Mel de Cana

These traditional biscuits are made with sugar cane molasses and spices and, like bolo de mel, are often prepared during the Christmas season. You can find the freshest ones at Fábrica de Sto. António. Besides the traditional broas de mel, I also recommend their Beijinhos de Avelã (hazelnut cookies), lemon cookies, and ginger cookies.

Queijadas da Madeira

These small pastries are made with fresh cottage cheese (requeijão), sugar and eggs. They are commonly found in bakeries and markets across the island. The best ones come from Miminho (two locations, one in Ribeira Brava and another in Funchal). Alternatively, Sésamo (three locations) also offers a good enough version.

Bolo Preto

Bolo preto (or bolo família, if it has raisins and dried fruit) is a traditional cake made with molasses, stout beer, Madeira wine, and spices. Unlike bolo de mel, which is dry, this one is fluffy and moist. You can usually find it at smaller, family run supermarkets, as well as at Santo da Serra.

Bolo Philadelphia

Most Madeirans don’t realise this cake doesn’t exist anywhere else (or at least, I haven’t found it.). It’s a chocolate cake covered with a layer of philadelphia cheese mixed with shredded coconut. You can find this is basically every café, bakery or supermarket on the island.

Why eat sugar when you have Nature’s best desserts all around?

Apart from the famous Madeira bananas, you have other types of banana (apple banana, for example), passion fruit, mango, custard apple (anona) and many more tropical fruits. Every month, I let you know what’s in season so that you can look for the freshest ones.

Drinks

Brisa Maracujá

Brisa Maracujá was the world’s first passion fruit soda, and to me it is the taste of Madeira. Refreshing, acidic just in the right amount, and perfect to counter the fatness of a rich, buttery bolo do caco or fries.

Madeira Wine

Madeira wine is the island’s most famous export abroad. This fortified wine ranges from dry to very sweet depending on the grape variety and is known for its distinctive oxidised flavour. It’s taken as a digestive, not a table wine, so you should have it at the end of your meal.

Poncha

Poncha is Madeira’s most famous drink. It is made with sugar cane rum, honey and citrus juice and originated in the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. Many bars now serve variations with passion fruit or other tropical flavours. I have previously dedicated a whole other article to poncha.

Nikita

A surprisingly popular drink on the island, Nikita is a sweet cocktail made with beer, pineapple juice and vanilla ice cream. It is often served in beach bars and summer terraces. The first time I saw it I was appalled, but you only live once!

Pé de Cabra

I think we’re seeing a recurring theme now in Câmara de Lobos. Pé de Cabra (literally, “crowbar”) is another cocktail that hails from this village, albeit from the mountainous areas. It consists of dry Madeira win, stout beer, sugar, chocolate powder, and lemon zest.

Madeiran cuisine is not elaborate. The key are fresh ingredients. You have fresh fish from the Atlantic, grass-fed animals from the mountains, bread enriched with sweet potatoes due to the lack of flour, plenty of herbs and spices. And fruit, lots of fruit!

If you really want to experience Madeira, you need to venture beyond the capital. The good news is that there are good restaurants all around the island, including some that fit into any budget. These are some of the best snack bars that serve simple, hearty meals at reasonable prices.

Don’t expect anything fancy. The décor is usually simple, but the food is authentic, filling and very local. Expect lots of sandwiches in bolo do caco (“pregos”), and traditional dishes such as chicken, meat seasoned with garlic and wine, tuna steak and stews. If the tables are full of workers and elder locals, you know you are in the right place.

Câmara de Lobos

Just west of Funchal, Câmara de Lobos is a fishing village with plenty of traditional restaurants. Some, like A Parreira, o Lagar and o Polar are famous for their espetada with milho frito. However, there are also other budget meals.

Vila da Carne

A Vila da Carne is often mentioned on Reddit when users discuss budget meals in Madeira. The restaurant is particularly known for espetada and other traditional meat dishes. Despite its popularity, prices remain very reasonable for the size of each portion.

Vila do Peixe

The sister to Vila da Carne is Vila do Peixe. Located near the harbour, this restaurant specialises in fresh fish. It is slightly more polished than a typical snack bar but still offers good value compared with many restaurants.

Ribeira Brava

Ribeira Brava is one of the most central places on the island. If you’re exploring the south coast, it sits more or less in the middle. And if you’re heading to the North, that’s also where roads intersect.

Bar do Ameixa

The best value for money might be Bar do Ameixa, just on exit of Via Rápida. It’s a small, friendly place with good value lunches. Just ask what the prato do dia (daily special) is and go from there.

Década Café

A Venezuelan café where you can have a chicken or meat empanada for 2.3€, and an arepa for less than 10€. These are alway crispy, traditionally Venezuelan (there’s a huge community in Ribeira Brava), and be fulfilling for the rest of the day.

Calheta

Some of my favourites in this area include o Forno and o Farolim, both in Ponta do Pargo. But if you’re looking for a quick meal, the southwest coast is full of small villages where simple cafés serve honest local food.

Joe’s Bar, Jardim do mar

Joe’s is relaxed bar overlooking the ocean that has become popular with surfers and travellers. The atmosphere is charming, portions are generous and prices remain very fair. Plus, it’s almost always open: from 10 am to 24:00.

Recanto Snack Bar, Arco da Calheta

An unassuming snack bar in Arco da Calheta where you can have a steak, limpets, carne de vinha d’alhos (pork with wine and garlic), a prego or a dish of the day for 10€. Easy, cheap, and efficient.

Snack Bar Picadinho, Arco da Calheta

Also in Arco da Calheta, there’s Snack Bar Picadinho, which offers several “prego” sandwiches and small picados for under 10€. Besides, there are also several vegetarian options, including vegan picado.

Porto Moniz

In Porto Moniz itself, I’d avoid most snack bars near the pools. They get customers regardless! The trick is to look up: you get the views, but better food.

Avista Navios, Seixal

Perched above the coastline, Avista offers beautiful views over the Atlantic, similar to those of Espaço Infinito. The setting alone makes it worth the stop. However, they also serve quick meals like hamburgers and sandwiches that will keep you filled while you discover the rest of the North coast.

Snack bar Amazónia

A little further up from the pools, there are a few more options. One of them is Snack bar Amazónia, where you can find empanadas, sandwiches (“pregos” and “tostas”) and fries. This is small town Portugal’s answer to fast food.

São Vicente

This quiet town on the north coast has several small bars and cafés where you can eat well without spending too much. São Vicente used to be packed with these places, but these days it’s more about bars and finger food.

A Poncha de São Vicente

A laid-back bar known for poncha. Besides drinks, a Poncha de São Vicente also serves casual food, such as onion rings, chicken wings and nachos, plus picados and pregos (our version of fast food).

Pub O Corvo

Again with the drinks? Well, São Vicente is one of the coldest places on the island, so you may need them. The Corvo Pub, right in the city centre, also serves regional tomato soup and sandwhiches. Plus, drinks always come with a side of peanuts or lupins.

Santana

Santana has some of the prettiest trails on the island. And if you want to refill your energy bar after a hike, look here:

Bolo do Caco Grill & Pizza, São Jorge

Despite the name, this casual restaurant serves much more than bolo do caco. Expect grilled dishes, pizzas and generous portions at very reasonable prices, directly from farm to table. You won’t regret it!

Cachadinha Snack Bar, Santana

Cachadinha is a simple snack-bar, serving ponchas, beers, and snacks such as bifanas (pork meat with a spicy sauce), tuna sandwiches, chicken sandwiches and toasts. Is there a better way to recover from a levada?

Machico

One of the island’s oldest towns, Machico has several small cafés and restaurants serving inexpensive lunches.

Secreta

O Secreta is a well-liked local restaurant perfect for a light and relaxed lunch. It focuses mostly on snacks such as bruschettas, cheese platters, sandwiches, hamburgers, and canned fish (which is a part of Portuguese culture, so don’t miss the oppportunity!).

O Famoso Galã

O Galã is somewhat of an institution in Machico. It’s great for breakfast or lunch, and their combo plates are still very budget-friendly. On the downside, it can get a bit busy and service tends to be slow.

A Fragateira, Porto da Cruz

A Fragateira is the most unassuming bar you can imagine, with old style furniture. It’s always been run by the same couple, and their specialities are fish soup and gaiado (skipjack tuna) sandwiches. It’s not that easy to prepare, so take your chance.

The Secret to Eating Cheap in Madeira

The truth is that restaurants like these exist all across the island. Almost every town and village in Madeira has a few small cafés or snack bars serving daily lunch specials for locals.

Look for a chalkboard advertising the prato do dia, step inside, and you will usually find a generous plate of traditional food at a very reasonable price. It may not be fancy, but it is authentic, satisfying and one of the best ways to experience everyday food in Madeira.

Stay away from Pingo Doce

If you are looking for cheap food, whatever you do, do not default to the restaurant at Pingo Doce. It may look convenient, but it is rarely the most interesting option. For roughly the same price or just a little more, you can eat a proper hot meal cooked that day in a local café. You will also get a far more authentic experience.

The secret is to hunt for a prato do dia (“dish of the day” or “daily special”). Many cafés and snack bars across Madeira offer a daily dish at lunchtime, usually between about €10-€12. Otherwise, you can settle for a “prego” (a sandwich, or our answer to hamburgers and hot dogs).

What’s a prato do dia like?

The meal typically includes a hearty plate of food and sometimes a drink or coffee. Dishes rotate and often include things like grilled chicken, vinha d’alhos (pork with wine and garlic), fish in vilhão sauce, macarrão (pasta stew) or scabbard fish. Simple, but filling and very local.

Where to find cheap meals in Funchal

Here are some of the best places in Funchal where you can eat well without spending much.

A Tendinha

A Tendinha is a long-standing local favourite that consistently ranks very highly on Google Maps (4.9). It is the kind of place where people working in the city centre stop for lunch. Expect octopus, fish and seafood, generous portions and a reliable prato do dia. Cash only.

Rustikus

Like a Tendinha, Rustikus shares a central location and an impressive 4.9 ranking on Google Maps. It’s a casual place with heart, uncomplicated food. Specials include duck rice, fish served with cornmeal, bean rice, cod, meat croquettes, and it’s even cheaper for takeaway.

Bela 5

Another small café popular with locals and tourists alike (4.8 on Google Maps). It is known for good value lunches, although prices have gone up in the last year. You can still get a prego or prego de atum for a very good price, or share a picado (even a small one is enough for 2).

O Leque

O Leque, ranking 4.7, could not be more central at Praça do Município. There are daily specials for under 10€, along with staples like fried scabbard fish and tuna with an onion sauce (8€). If you happen not to like the dailies, go for a sandwich with sccabard fish, steak or tuna (5€).

Cantinho dos Petiscos

O Cantinho dos Petiscos is further away from the centre than any other option, but with a well-deserved ranking of 4.7 on Google Maps , I felt like I couldn’t keep you from it. Dishes here are mostly picados to share, along with stir-fried prawns, squid, and other Portuguese delicacies.

O Castelo dos Hamburgers

O Castelo dos Hamburgers (ranked 4.6) is a little local institution known for its, as you may guess, hamburgers and sauce. That’s pretty much the only item on the menu, but it’s cheap and fulfilling. They use bolo do caco and also make very good fruit juices and smoothies.

A Bica

A very traditional restaurant near the Farmer’s Market (also ranked with 4.6 on Google Maps). Although it’s less of snack bar than previous options, it’s still a family-run, no frills place with a casual atmosphere. Portions are generous, so you can usually share.

José Café Buffet

José Café is a buffet restaurant not far from the city centre and, like the previous options, currently ranks 4.6 on Google Maps. It’s nothing fancy, but it is dependable and they usually have some traditional food, such as cod or milho frito. Besides, there are Venezuelan empadas.

Sirius

Sirius is another central place known for daily specials, ranked 4.5. Is it the best food you’ll have in your life? Probably not. But for the same price you’d pay at Pingo Doce, you can have soup, a homemade dish of the day and a coffee, so it will always win in value for money.

Multidelícias

The Venezuelan community here is so large that Venezuelan food is a part of daily life. If you’re looking to try it, you can head to Multidelícias in Sto. António to try arepas and empanadas, which also make for an inexpensive and fulfilling lunch or dinner. It’s only ranked 4.4, but you’ll have a good experience if you stick to the Venezuelan menu!

There are also several other small cafés around Funchal that offer excellent pratos do dia. Look for simple interiors, handwritten menus, unpretentious plating, and locals filling the tables at lunchtime. Arrive at lunchtime, and enjoy a proper Madeiran meal without spending much.

Finally, a last tip Some restaurants in Funchal offer significant discounts through the app The Fork, sometimes up to 30 or 50 percent off the bill if you book in advance. These deals usually apply to slightly more formal restaurants rather than snack bars, but they can make a mid-range meal surprisingly affordable.

But whether you’re a coeliac, travelling with one or simply gluten intolerant, I promise you that won’t compromise things for you in Madeira. Here are my tips for staying gluten free in Madeira!

First: Where to shop Gluten Free

I know a lot of coeliacs will only feel completely safe if they’re cooking and preparing most of their meals, or eating packaged snacks throughout the day. If that’s you, there are several places where you can find gluten free products in Madeira:

• every Pingo Doce and Continente supermarket has a “healthy food section” where you’ll find gluten free pastas, gluten free cookies and snacks, and gluten free pizza. Pingo Doce even has frozen gluten-free pastéis de nata, if you happen yo have an oven at your accommodation.

• Gluten Free Express at Rua das Mercês 9, in Funchal, is a small supermarket with gluten free goods brought over from the mainland. It’s a great place to buy traditional Portuguese products, like pastéis de nata and other cakes. The owner’s son has coeliacs, so it’s 100% safe.

• speciality stores like Celeiro and Plano D in Funchal also have quite a few gluten free options, including pastas and other snacks. Plano D also tends to have gluten free lunch options, although I can’t guarantee there will be no cross contamination. Ask the staff, they’re knowledgeable.

• Bioforma, with stores spread throughout the island, carries gluten free products as well. I find their selection less interesting that Celeiro’s or Plano D, but outside of Funchal is a good option. There’s even one in Porto Santo!

• Apães Gluten Free Bakery, although not an establishment, sells their breads in Viana Pastelaria, Ervanária das Madalenas, and Gela-tô. I suggest checking out their Instagram to find our where they are and, if you’re staying for a few days, even order your own gluten-free bolo do caco.

• Amora Ginja Frutaria, in Ribeira Brava’s Market, is one of the best bulk stores in the island. You’ll be able to find dried fruits, spices, quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth and other gluten free pseudo-cereals at a good price.

Second: which Madeira foods are gluten free?

Madeira’s most typical food consists in grilled meat (espetada) and grilled fish (tuna, scabbard fish, and other local fish). These are very, very unlikely to be cross contaminated with gluten. You only need to stay away from “filetes panados”, which are fried and have a sort of tempura. Stick to grilled proteins and you’ll be good.

Now, for the sides, you’ll be able to find fresh salads, vegetables, fries, gorgeous sweet potatoes, and rice everywhere. Vegetables tend to be local and not frozen, so any good restaurant will be able to avoid cross contamination. Frozen fries may not be 100% safe, so look for fries that look cut by hand. It won’t be hard.

What about milho frito?

Then there’s milho frito, which made out of cornmeal. Traditionally, this will be 100% gluten free. However, some restaurants may fry it along with other things that have wheat in it. My advice is to explain it clearly to restaurant staff, or go to a restaurant that’s well-known to be careful. You must try it before you leave!

Where can you eat gluten free in Madeira?

Mad Market at Estrada Monumental 384 has great reviews from coeliacs. They have main dishes, dessert and even gluten-free beer on their menu, so I’m sure you’ll be able to enjoy a good meal without having to worry about gluten.

X Tonel at Estrada Monumental 118, is a British-Madeiran venture (a labour of love) that has a dedicated gluten-free menu. This couple has been serving gluten free food for over 20 years with no complaints, so they’re as trustworthy as it gets when it comes to eating out gluten-free in Madeira.

Terra – Food Concept at Rua do Bispo 12 is one of my favourite places in Funchal for their vegetarian options. The staff here tend to be very careful, and they’ll check with the chef if there’s a doubt about intolerances. You’ll have 2-3 safe choices for a starter, main dish and dessert.

Cris Place, at Rua da Casa Branca nº34A, is well-known for catering to different dietary needs, including gluten-free. They have a modern take on traditional dishes, and can adapt with gluten-free bread and dairy-free cheese. Staff will mind even trace amounts, so you can relax from the starter to dessert.

Il Basilico, at Rua de Leichlingen 9, has several gluten-free pastas and risottos. I never tried gluten free options there, but Find me Gluten Free assures me the staff was very careful throughout and there’s even gluten-free pizza, which I didn’t know!

The Snug Smokehouse, at Rua do Hospital 36, is a central hamburger joint with hamburgers, burritos and bowls. I’m told they have gluten-free buns now, plus there are bowls with rice, so it’s a nice option near the Mercado dos Lavradors.

Década (Ribeira Brava) is a Venezuelan place with empanadas and arepas, all made with cornmeal. If you’re just staying gluten-free, it’s a great option. If you’re celiac, ask the staff to make sure there’s no cross-contamination with sauces or seasonings used in the fillings.

Hotel Saccharum (Calheta) is the only gluten-free certified hotel in Madeira by the Portuguese Association of Celiacs. Their Engenho, Garapa and Alambique restaurants should able to provide you a safe meal without traces of gluten or cross contamination, so it’s a great spot to keep in mind outside of Funchal.

Mesa Cultural (Porto Santo) is my favourite restaurant in Porto Santo and the only one I’d recommend to coeliacs. The chef and the staff are very knowledgeable so I’m sure they’ll be able to cater to your needs. Gluten free options include quinoa salads, lentil dahl, chickpea masala, chicken curry, duck confit, papadums, basmati rice, and their earth-shaterring coconut-pineapple panacotta.

Finally, McDonald’s and Burger King both have gluten free menus available. No one comes to Madeira to have these – or at least I hope not – but, as a last resort, if you’re arriving late, or if you want to order in, there’s always the comfort in knowing these two will have you covered.

Gluten free desserts in Madeira

Loja do Chá, at Rua do Sabão 33, offers several gluten-free and lactose-free cakes, including local chestnut cakes from Curral das Freiras. If you’re in for a middle of the day treat, this is the place to go.

Friic, in Fórum Madeira, is my absolute favourite place to get ice cream in Madeira. They have gluten-free and dairy free options made with Madeiran fruits. Try the guava, cherimoya and surinam cherry sorbets, along with dark chocolate or chocolate & hazelnut.

Veganaria, in Ponta do Sol, is one of my favourite delis in the whole island. They focus on cashew-based vegan cheese, and their weekly selection always includes at least one gluten free cheesecake. Open on Fridays and Saturdays only.

The month starts off with a holiday on the 2nd of April. It’s the Dia da Autonomia, meaning “Autonomy Day”, celebrating the island’s political autonomy since 1976. Since this is a newer holiday, there aren’t a lot of traditions associated with this holiday.

However, if you’re using public transport, you should look for holiday’s timetables. Some restaurants, shops and services may likewise be closed. And then, this year Good Friday falls on April 3rd, so you should prepare yourself for a long, holiday weekend.

Get on Board with Easter Traditions, 3-5 April

In 2026, Good Friday falls on the 3rd of April and Easter Sunday falls on 5 April. And Madeira is still a very religious community where people prepare their houses to receive the Holy Spirit in the following days. I wasn’t privy to these traditions while I lived in the mainland, and the religious side still confuses me.

However, I think we call get on board with a few traditions. Eastertime is known for its sweets, namely amêndoas de Páscoa (Easter almonds and dragees), amêndoas moles (a softer version of the traditional almonds), and torrões, a sugar-based fruit sweets with a texture akin to marzipan’s.

Madeira being Madeira, you can expect a twist on all of these. Fábrica de Santo António produces over 20 tonnes of Easter Almonds yearly, with flavours such as passion fruit, anise, orange, and other tropical fruits. Apart from the traditional Fábrica de Santo António, you can also try some traditional sweets at bakeries like Sésamo and Viana.

Attend Festa do Limão in Santana, 11–12 April

Every month, I keep telling you to attend a traditional “arraial” : local festivities with food, music, and good disposition. One of the greatest ones this month is the lemon festival in the small parish of Ilha, in Santana. Despite being the island’s second smallest parish, it produces around 90 tonnes of lemons a year, which feels like an absurd amount.

Along with the lemon festival, there’s also a Festa do Despique, which is something you have to experience – no translation can truly make justice to this raucous party where people spar verses on the spot. Thing rap battle, but with an accordion, copious wine, and a thick Madeiran accent thrown in the mix.

Enjoy the Madeira Rum Festival, 14–18 April

Throughout April and May, Funchal is filled with events in the city centre. The first of these will the Madeira Rum Festival from April 14th to April 18th. This little festival brings together all the producers of aguardente, a fermented drink made from sugar cane similar to rum. It’s one of the main ingredients in poncha.

You can taste different drinks produced on the island, attend masterclasses, speedtastings and concerts at the venue. It’s a free, open-air event (you only pay for the drinks!). So, if you distilled drinks, this may be interesting for you. I’d also like to point out the traditional wicker chairs at the venue, made from vine or sugarcane waste.

Explore VivaCidade in Funchal, 16–18 April

When I said Funchal would be packed with events, I wasn’t lying. At the same time as the Rum Festival, the city council promotes the VivaCidade event, with performances and music spread across key spots in the city centre. So, if you’re coming at that time, prepare for what will look like impromptu performances all around.

See Expo Tropical, also in Funchal, 23–26 April

Expo Tropical returns from the 23rd to the 26th April. The event, which is usually at the Promenade, celebrates Madeira’s subtropical fruits (cherimoya, avocados, banana, pitaya, passion fruint, and so on). There will be small food stalls, entertainment and concerts. The proceeds go to disadvantaged communities in the Sta. Maria Maior parish.

Taste loquats and Passion Fruit

I always warn tourists that they should look for what’s on season when they go to the Farmer’s Market. Otherwise, you’ll end up buying overpriced, imported fruits from Latin America. In April, we’ll start having loquats (nêsperas, in Portuguese) and different kinds of passion fruit (maracujá).

Of course, bananas are available all year around. There’s the classic, tiny Madeira bananas, but also passion fruit banana and banana prata. With some luck, you may also be able to find the very first strawberries, blackberries and pepino melon ( known as pêla meloa or melão da terra).

Look Out for the Flowers

Apart from the fruits, you should also look out for flowers at the market. Around this time you’ll start seeing dazzling, bright proteas, either in yellow or orange. There are also larger, pink proteas, but those wither rather quickly. I also like orange caninhas da Índia, as well as a local smaller, white flowers that have a lovely perfume.

Have a Beach day in Machico

The weather in April can be Summery and delightful, or it can be stormy like a late Winter. There have been years when I was happily swimming in April, like 2024, and years when the ocean was choppy and unwelcoming, such as 2025. I hope you’re mentally prepared for this roulette.

However, the artificial sand beach in Machico tends to be calmer (it’s protected from the tides) and warmer (the climate on that part of the island is drier). So, if you’re staying for a week, I’m positive you’ll have at least one day at the beach in Machico. Towards the end of the month, the likelihood is even greater.

Hike at Ponta de São Lourenço

If you want one walk that’s high reward without being a levada, try Ponta de São Lourenço. It’s dry, dramatic, and may be windy at this time of the year, but that’s better than the unforgiving heat of the Summer months. If the weather is nice, you may even go for a swim at the end!

Surf in Seixal or Porto da Cruz

Madeira’s North Coast is cooler, choppier, and better for surfing. While most surfers prefer to come between October and March, you’ll probably still find some decent waves in April both in Seixal (Porto Moniz) and at Porto da Cruz (Machico). There are surf schools in both villages, and the infrastructure at Praia da Alagoa is excellent. (

Levadas: 25 Fontes and Caldeirão Verde

Speaking of levadas, most of them are in the clear when in comes to April. I’ve already recommended Caldeirão Verde in March, since it looks positively lush. This levada will take a whole day to complete, since it’s 8.7 kms (single way) or 17.4 km (roundtrip). It’s also a hard one, so you should be fit and not afraid of heights.

Another option is Levada das 25 Fontes (medium difficulty), which runs parallel to Levada do Risco (easier). If you need help to buy your levada tickets in Madeira, I’ve covered here how to use SIMplifica to both book and pay for your levada tickets.

Canyoning and More Adrenaline in Madeira

If you want an adrenaline day that isn’t just hiking and climbing, canyoning might just do the trick. After the rain season, the water streams aren’t dry. Yet, going into the central mountain range is usually safe and pleasant at this time of the year. If you’re looking for a reputable company, I recommend Epic Madeira.

Sunrise in the mountains, Or a late sunset reward

In the last few years, seeing the sunrise from the peaks has become quite popular. However, driving through the clouds and cold in the early mornings of January, February and March doesn’t make for the best plan. Take it from one who’s been there. In April, things start to change.

Obviously, the sun rises earlier so you’ll need to wake up early to get to Pico do Areeiro, Pico Ruivo, Bica da Cana or even the peaks around Funchal before sunrise. It will still be a little cold (do bring warm layers), but once the sun rises it’s just right for a warm cup of hot cocoa, tea, or morning coffee.

If you don’t like to get up early while on holiday, I suggest seeing the sunset from up there. It’s equally beautiful, and the logistics are simpler. Throughout April, sunset will be around 20:00-20:30, giving you plenty of time to enjoy your day.

Get on a Boat in the Late Afternoon

If you don’t want to drive, then settle for the next best thing: seeing the sunset from a boat. Boat tours tend to go longer from April onwards, allowing you to see the sunset from the sea, or go for a late afternoon swim right below Cabo Girão.

Challenge Yourself on MIUT weekend

MIUT stands for “Madeira Island Ultra-Trail” and it’s an event like any other. This ultra-trail event covers the whole island, peak to peak, coast to coast, tip to tip, leaving no stone unturned on the whole island. Most tickets are sold out, but there are still a few left if you think you’re up for the challenge.

This year, MIUT starts April 25th at midnight and ends April 26th at 08:30. Coincidentally, April 25th is also a public holiday. This time, we celebrate the end of the dictatorship in 1974. Because of its historical importance, most Portuguese respect this holiday.

And for more flower galore, Festival da Flor starts officially on the 30th of April.

(Full disclosure, I already have an article about what to do if you’re tired of hiking. Yes, because those walks can be misleading and more tiring that you’d expect. If that’s you’re case, here are a few things you can do to relax in Madeira.)

Now, if you don’t like hiking at all, stay put. I’ll give you quite a few alternative plans of things you may enjoy in Madeira without hiking. Despite its small size, the island packs a punch! It may surprise you.

Watch Dolphin and whales in The High Seas

If you don’t want to explore the mountains, look the other way. The ocean is just as important to define Madeira’s character and culture as the mountain rage. So, embark on a dolphin and whale watching tour along the shore.

Boats go out from Funchal’s pier every day, as long as the weather allows. If you’ve never seen dolphins before (or if you’ve only seen them at aquariums), this is an unmissable opportunity to see them in the wild. Click here to book your tickets.

Do you get seasick easily? Then, I have a few tips for you. The first is to take some Vomidrine about half an hour before. The second is to pick boats that are larger and steadier. And finally, don’t stay in the front of the boat.

Swim in lava pools in Porto Moniz and Seixal

I’m a big fan of the North coast. As far as I’m concerned, you should always reserve at least a day to visit the North coast on your Madeira trip, even if you’re not staying for more than 5 days. And the absolute highlight are the Porto Moniz natural lava pools.

Now, as idyllic as they sound, these pools have two problems. The first is that the pretty, pretty basalt of the pools isn’t soft – bring your water shoes. The second is they suffer from their own success. Last Summer, they were often packed.

An alternative are the Seixal lava pools. Not as pretty, but very beautiful nonetheless, and more of the beaten path.Just beware waves can climb over the pool, so it’s essential the ocean is calm. If it’s choppy, you need to be extra careful.

Take a Cable car down to a Fajã (If you’re not Afraid of Heights)

A “fajã” is a small, fertile piece of land located at the base of coastal cliffs. You can find different fajãs in Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde. In the past, these plots used to be reachable only by boat. But we’re not living in the past anymore.

In the last decades, quite a few cable cars were installed to reach the most remote fajãs. So, if you want to do Madeira without hiking, these will be right up your alley. The cable car at Achadas da Cruz takes you to what seems a far-removed place, almost untouched by men.

Another popular cable car is Fajã dos Padres. This is a fajã in Câmara de Lobos, farmed to this day. There are vineyards, fruit trees, and a restaurant that serves locally grown food. This will feel like an absolute escape, and the ride is very pretty as well.

Plan a few Daytrips

In Madeira, you’re never more than one hour away from anything. But, without planning, it’s unlikely you can visit everything. So, the best tip I can give for people coming to Madeira is to divide the island into areas.

Towards the east side, you can’t miss the martian landscape of Ponta de S. Lourenço and the small city of Porto da Cruz. It has a small, pocket beach, beautiful fossilised cliffs, and traditional taverns. Plus, you can visit the rum factory (aguardente).

On the north side, you have Ribeira da Janela, Seixal, and Porto Moniz. And on the south coast, there’s the small fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, the charming Ponta do Sol, and the sand beach at Calheta. You can even visit some of these without a car.

drive to one of Madeira’s best Viewpoints

Hiking rewards you with almost untouched landscapes, deep into the laurissilva forest. However, many of Madeira’s best viewpoints are accessible by car. My advise would be to plan your itinerary for the day and stop in 3 to 4 viewpoints along the route.

As long as you’re willing to rent a car, you can reach the Cabo Girão skywalk (entrance fee 3€), Miradouro da Eira da Achada, Véu da Noiva and Miradouro do Guindaste (all in the North cost), Ponta do Rosto (in Ponta de S. Lourenço) or Bica da Cana. And if you want more ideas, here are some of the most scenic roads in Madeira.

If you’re not comfortable with driving, I’d urge you to look for a tour that includes Cabo Girão as well as other areas of the island. This one, for example, covers Cabo Girão, the Fanal Forest, and Porto Moniz.

Do a 4x4 Tour with a guide

Driving in Madeira requires quite a bit of attention. In that sense, it’s not fair for the person doing most of the driving. If you want to relax, or if you simply don’t feel like driving, you can also book a 4x4 tour with a guide.

With that in mind, I searched some of the most exhaustive tours out there. This 4x4 tour covers quite a lot in the Northern and Eastern part of the island, including Pico de Arieiro, Ribeiro Frio, Santana, Porto da Cruz and Ponta de S. Lourenço.

And here’s another tour that also packs a lot, covering the Fanal forest, an absolute mystical place, as well as the lava pools in Porto Santo. This one will truly take you to the heart of Madeira without hiking or driving.

Get an adrenaline rush over the ocean

Thrilled with the 4x4? Keep the adrenaline going with parasailing, paragliding or a swing over the ocean. I’ve covered a few unexpected activities in Madeira before, and here’s the link to book your ticket for the zipeline and swing over Seixal. You’ll feel like you’re flying over the ocean.

Visit the gardens in Funchal

Madeira used to be called “a garden”. Granted, that was a wordplay with the surname of the president who ruled for 37 years. But there’s truth to it. There’s greenery everywhere! You can find banana trees even in the middle of the city, and Monte (uphill) is still filled with villas and their perfectly coiffed gardens.

Monte Palace (in the photo) is my favourite. You can take the cable car almost to its gate. Inside, there’s an Japanese-inspired garden, exotic plants from all over the world, African art, a lake, free-roaming animals, and lots of small places to explore and discover.

Another favourite are the Botanical Gardens (you need to take a second cable car), the Monte Garden itself and the Quinta do Imperador. Elsewhere in Funchal, you can also visit the Palheiro Gardens in S. Gonçalo.

Book a food tour in Funchal

Nothing is as revealing about local history and culture as food. And, as I’ve said numerous times, Madeiran food is not Portuguese food. Forget everything you think you know about Portuguese food and discover local flavours.

For meat lovers, there’s carne de vinha d’alhos (pork with garlic and wine, popular during Christmas time), picado (a sharable meat dish in sauce), and espetadas (skewers). For fish eaters, there’s lapas (limpets), tune, and scabbard fish.

In terms of snacks, you have bolo do caco, pão de casa, tremoços, favas, tropical fruits, cookies, bolo de mel, queijadas, and bolo preto. And then come the drinks: Coral, poncha, Nikita and my personal favourite, Brisa Maracujá. You can book your Funchal food tour here.

Picnic in the mountains

You don’t like hiking? It rained the previous days? I’ll let you on a little secret: you can always make a picnic and enjoy the mountains. It’s a very low effort, high reward activity, and something you can do all year round.

A mountain picnic is the most Madeiran way to slow down, and you’ll often find Madeirans barbecuing on weekends. Hit a supermarket, pick a viewpoint or a quiet area, and let the island do the work. If you need ideas, here are a few of my favourite picnic areas in Madeira.

Bonus points if you combine it with some scenic roads and viewpoints. Simple, yet so rewarding. And that’s Madeira!

But how do you book and pay for levadas now? Using the SIMplifica portal.

Ironically, simplifica means “simplify”. However, very few visitors find the system easy to navigate. I hope this step by step guide on how to book hikes using SIMplifica makes it simple for you!

Step 0: Before you pay anything, check if It’s Open

Is the trail open today?

Madeira trails close often due to poor weather or landslides. So, before you book, check the official trail info/status page (IFCN / Visit Madeira). I’d recommend booking only on the day (or the day before) to ensure it will be open.

If you book ahead and the trail is closed, you can reschedule or cancel your booking. However, I do not have first hand experience with this. To avoid any issues, I recommend booking as close to the date as possible.

Step 1: Go to the SIMplifica Website

To book and pay for trails in Madeira, the page you’re looking for is this: SIMplifica Madeira. (If you’re on the homepage, you need to click on “Ticketing” [EN version] or “Bilhética” [PT version] and then click on “Payment of Fees for Access to Classified Hiking Trails”).

There are additional pages to pay for the Cabo Girão viewpoint (also known as the Cabo Girão Skywalk, with a glass floor 400 meters above the ocean) and the Santo António da Serra farm.

SIMplifica Portal Madeira

Step 2 (Optional): check the Availability of the PR trail you want

On that SIMplifica page, you’ll see a list of routes (PR numbers and names) in Madeira and Porto Santo. However, you need to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to check the availability of the trail (or trails) you want to trek. This is great for people who like to plan everything carefully.

Otherwise, you could click on ‘request’ and jump to Step 4 straight ahead.

Step 3 (Optional): See the entry time slots Available on your Preferred date

The system allocates capacity using 30-minute entry slots across the day. You choose the time slot that’s available and suits you. For example, if I click on “Levada das 25 Fontes” on the Hiking Trails menu, a second menu will appear:

On that second menu, click on the calendar icon. These are my options:

Once you choose the time slot, just press “confirm”. However, the page will ask you to confirm the reservation later on, which is why steps 2 and 3 are optional. This is just a way to make sure there’s availability on the dates and time slots you want.

Step 4: Add visitor details

The next page asks you for your email (where you’ll receive the confirmation), as well as the number of tickets you wish to purchase. So, if you’re coming with your family, you only have to do this once per trail! Don’t forget to check the little disclaimer below the email field.

Once you press following, the website asks you again the dates and time slot you want to book. (Yes, this will appear even if you did steps 2 and 3. I told you it doesn’t really “simplify” much!)

So, once again, select the route and the time slot:

Again, I’m choosing “Levada das 25 de Fontes” and the time slot I wanted. Click on the calendar icon on the second “booking period” menu.

Now, click “confirm” and we’re all set for 25 Fontes:

Step 5: If you’re doing more than one PR, add them in the same booking

This is the part most people miss. Each trail costs 4.5€. However, there’s a daily fee of 9€ for 2-3 trails; a 3-day ticket of 22.5€ for two or more trails; and a 7-day ticket of 52.50€ for two or more bookings over the period of 7 days.

The 3 or 7-day tickets are not available to buy. Instead, you need to book all of your hikes and the website will find the most economical fee for you. So, if you’re planning on hiking several levadas, this is a crucial step for you.

Once this page appears, click “yes”.

I’m now going to add Levada do Caldeirão Verde for the next day, and Vereda dos Balcões for the day after that.

The process is the same, you always need to select the route and the time slot:

Again, I have the choice to add another reservation:

Again, choose the route and the booking period (you’ll be used to it at this point):

And since I’m finally done, I’m not adding any more reservations.

Step 6: Pay online

Now, it’s time to pay for the levadas in Madeira.

Because I booked for three different days, it’s not giving me the 9€ ticket (however, it’s not making me pay the 3 day ticket either, which would be more expensive). This is what the payment page looks like:

Once you click ‘pay’, the page immediately turns to Portuguese even though I was on the English website. You have three options to pay: Cartão débito/ crédito, Multibanco and MBWAY. The last two are only available in Portugal, so you need to choose payment by card.

Click on “cartão de crédito/ débito” (Credit/debit card) and then click on the blue bar saying “seguinte” (meaning next). Another page will open where you should enter your card details. No other payment method is accepted – no Paypal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or nothing of the sort.

And that’s it!

What Happens if you Don’t book or Pay for the Levadas in Madeira?

At the moment, this is an honour system. I have yet to see someone checking the tickets at the entrance. However, best not risk it. Do get your tickets before heading to the levadas.

If you haven’t bought it beforehand, there will be a QR code at the beginning of each trail so that you can go to the website and buy them. There are no personnel selling tickets at the sites, except for Cabo Girão.

Are flights in Madeira cancelled often?

Madeira Airport (FNC) is famous for two things: the runway extending over the ocean, and its windy weather. For aviation fans, the live feed with arrivals feels like a spectacle. For users, it means flights do not land when the windy exceeds 25 knots.

Mind you, landing is much harder than departing. But since Madeira’s airport is not a big hub, you usually need incoming flights to land so that planes become available for departures. This is why disruptions in the morning are often felt throughout the day.

What can you do when your flight from Madeira is cancelled?

Get To the boring admin first

The first thing you want to do is go to the airline’s counter. If there’s no personnel at the gate, then you need to go all the way back to main hall. If you had hold luggage, make sure to collect your baggage before leaving for the main hall.

Under EU passenger rights, when your flight is cancelled you generally have the right to choose between refund and rerouting, and you’re also entitled to “care” while you wait (food, drinks, and accommodation if needed), depending on the situation.

Generally speaking, it’s not worth it asking for a reroute. There’s only one airport on the island, and you can only go to Porto Santo by boat. So, it’s better to let the airline handle it. There’s no guarantee other flights will be able to make it out, even if they’re to the mainland.

Keep The receipts

It’s hard to keep a cool head under these circumstances, but you must try. For starters, screenshot everything: the cancellation notice, new booking screens, and any chat support promises. However, the airline may not be able to provide you a new flight date immediately if the weather conditions don’t improve.

If you end up paying for meals at the airport, taxis, or a hotel because support didn’t materialise, keep the receipts. EU guidance explicitly points to “care” obligations in overnight delays or cancellations. If the airline goes quiet, Madeira Airport has a passenger rights page that’s useful for grounding what should happen next.

Arrange your accommodation

Ask the airline, if possible in writing (chat/email), what they’re covering: hotel, meals, transfers. If they can’t place you, book what you can afford and keep receipts. EU passenger rights include accommodation and transport to it when an overnight stay becomes necessary, as part of “care” obligations, even under severe weather.

When several flights are delayed, it may be hard to find accommodation on the island on websites such as Booking. However, remember that if no one is landing either, several rooms with become available. Things usually even out. So, in doubt, contact hotels directly. But make sure to book something before the airport turns into mayhem.

Decide where you’ll spend your stranded hours

Once everything is settled, don’t sit at the airport. You can easily go back to Funchal (take a taxi, an Uber, or the Aerobus), or do one Madeira-only thing that feels like a consolation prize you’d actually choose. You can either leave your bags at your new accommodation or leave it at several luggage storage places – there’s one at the airport and several in Funchal.

Just yesterday I was speaking with a lady who decided to sit at a snack-bar, drinking some poncha with a side of lupins and bolo do caco. She was fairly relaxed and living her best life while waiting for the wind to subside. There’s only so much you can control, and the weather is not one of them.

Ideas of What You Can do in Madeira When your Flight Gets cancelled

Go garden-hopping in Funchal

Windy conditions at the airport don’t always mean the weather is bad all round. Yesterday it was a bright, sunny day in Funchal despite over 80 flights cancelled and closed trails. You could, however, head safely to Monte Palace Tropical Garden, Palheiro Gardens, or the Botanical Gardens. This is the perfect plan if you’re planning on leaving tomorrow.

Book a 4x4 tour

Another option, especially if you’re not staying in Funchal, is booking a tour. There are several 4x4 tours around the island, perhaps in areas you didn’t have time to explore in your original stay. And you don’t even have to worry about renting another car, which makes it a very practical choice to spend an extra day.

Complete your bucket List

I’m willing to bet you didn’t do everything you want to on your trip. If there’s something missing from your bucketlist, this is your opportunity to complete it – as long as it’s not a levada that was closed in the meantime. You can go to areas of the island you haven’t been to, take a wine tasting tour, visit the distillery in Porto da Cruz, and so on.

Do a food-focused day

If your brain can’t take another transport decision, stay near your accommodation and eat your way through it. There are good restaurants spread all through the island serving espetada, picado, espada, milho frito and bolo do caco. A cancelled flight is not the moment for discipline or diet! Indulge in a comforting meal and finish with a treat.

Stay in Funchal If It’s a Rainy Day

Funchal is your safest bet if the storm is felt throughout the island. It’s sheltered, easy to get around, and you’re not committing to long drives that might become stressful. If you’re staying for a few days, I suggest a small routine: slow breakfast, one indoor activity, a long lunch, one more indoor stop, and then return your accommodation.

Visit a Museum in the City

Madeira isn’t known for its museums, but there are several small places that are perfect to spend a stormy afternoon. I’ve already given you some suggestions on what to do in Madeira on a rainy day, as well as a few recommendations if you’re travelling to Madeira with kids. I’m sure you’ll find an entertaining plan!

Make it a “treat yourself” day

If you’re stuck overnight (or for a few days) and the weather isn’t cooperative, lean into comfort. A lot of hotels have a pool, a spa, or a gym, and these don’t close because of the weather. Enjoy the marvels of the spa (especially if the airline is paying for it!) and relax from a tiring day at the airport.

Shopping and wandering

Funchal’s shopping centres aren’t why you came to Madeira, but they are useful when the wind is trying to push you into the Atlantic. They’re warm, predictable, and good for killing time between airline updates without getting soaked. Plus, there are several traditional shops where you can purchase some last minute souvenirs.

What Not to do When your Flight from Madeira is Cancelled

If the wind is the reason you’re grounded, avoid:

• Cable cars, including the cable car in Funchal;

• High viewpoints, including Pico do Areeiro or Bica da Cana;

• Long mountain drives, including to viewpoints such as Eira do Serrado;

• Levada routes that are prone to closures, rockfall risk, or swollen streams;

• Water activities, such as dolphin watching, since the ocean is likely to be choppy;

• Windier areas of the island such as Caniço, Machico and Ponta de São Lourenço.

Yes, being stranded and missing your flight isn’t fun. But in Madeira there’s always something else to see, or something else to do. You can make the most of this extra time with garden visits, excellent meals you cannot taste elsewhere, or an additional tour to other parts of the island. As long as you look at it has another day of adventure, you’ll forget you were angry 20 minutes ago.

When travelling to Madeira with kids, you’ll notice there are playgrounds everywhere and restaurants are generally relaxed about children being children, and some even offer toys. Overall, it’s a place where you can relax instead of being on edge all the time.

What to do with Kids in Funchal

If you’re staying in Funchal, here are a few activities you can do with kids:

Explore Parque de Santa Catarina

If you’re staying in Funchal, Parque de Santa Catarina is a great place to start. Imagine arriving here in the 15th century. You’re somewhere between the insurmountable mountains and the immense ocean, far removed from the world you know.

Once you put yourself in the shoes of the first settlers, your perspective will change. And then you’ll realize how one thing led to another, creating the first colony abroad. Madeira became the training ground for everything that would happen in Latin America.

But while you can muse about all of this, the kids can see the swans at the lake or hit the playground. It has a great feel to it, and you get proper views over the harbour while they play. If you’re staying nearby, take them at the end of the day to exhaust any remaining energy. The sunset from there is beautiful!

Play at Jardim Panorâmico do Lido, in Funchal

Another low effort, high reward activity in Funchal is visiting the Jardim Panorâmico do Lido, also known as the “hotel area”. The garden is built in several levels with incredible views over the ocean, and it has several tropical trees. It’s open every day from 08:00 to 22:00.

There are several entertainment areas at the garden, including a mini golf, padel courts, ping pong tables and, most importantly, an inflatable playground. These areas are not free to use, but they’re very affordable – the inflatable playground costs just 5€ an hour and it even has a monitor to look over the children.

You can sit at the bar, have a drink or eat a snack, while the children play around in a perfectly safe environment. Or you could all play together at the minigolf. Either way, this is always a win for families, especially if you’re staying nearby.

Relax at the pool in Lido

If you’re staying in Lido, your hotel probably has a pool. However, on the off chance you’re staying at an AirBnB, you can use the public pools in Lido. There are two: Piscina do Lido and Ponta Gorda.

Piscina do Lido is bigger, and it has two small children’s pools with a toboggans. Ponta Gorda is smaller, but has better access to the ocean. There’s also a children’s pool with a toboggan. Both have dressing rooms and lifeguards, apart from bars, sunbeds and umbrellas.

You can buy a card with several entrances to use on both pools. Otherwise, you can big a single-entrance card, which costs 2€ for children aged 7 to 17; and 6€ for adults.

Go up to Monte in Funchal

If you want one classic day that feels special without being complicated, go up to Monte. The cable car is basically sightseeing disguised as transport, and that’s exactly what you want with kids. (Unless your kids are afraid of heights, of course.)

I always advise people to reserve at least 2 to 3 hours to explore Monte Palace. Kids will delight with the flamingos, the Asian garden, the shady corners, the small vegetable garden, and the little trails. Then, you can come down in the famous carrinhos do Monte (the wicker sledges), ending the day on a high note.

Board the Santa Maria do Colombo

Another fun activity to do with kids in Funchal is going on Santa Maria do Colombo, which is a replica of Colombo’s boats. You almost feel like a pirate getting on board, and you’ll be even more amazed that these boats crossed the whole Atlantic.

Although this will bring a sense of adventure to your holiday, it’s up to you to decide if your kids will withstand a boat trip. Some kids get nauseated easily, so you know best. I do think it’s a cooler activity for older kids, from 10 years upwards.

Plan a small museum day

Madeira is good with kids because you can keep it flexible. You can wander and stop when you find something that catches their interest. But if you’re unlucky and catch a rainy day in Madeira, you need to have a B plan.

One of those plans is visiting an indoors museum. For children who like football, you can go to the CR7 Museum in the city centre, open every day from 10:00 to 17:00. Tickets cost 5€, although pricing may be subject to chance.

Another option is the Madeira Story Centre, which is an interactive museum by the cable car (you can combine this with your visit to Monte as well). It’s not boring, and children usually react well to it. Tickets cost 5€ for adults at 3€ for children. Open every day from 09:00 to 19:00.

Finally, there’s the 3D Fun Art Museum with optical illusions. Located right in the city centre, it’s guaranteed to please the children. But it’s a little on the expensive side: 9€ for children aged 5 to 12, and 11€ for adults. Family tickets (2 adults, 1 child) cost 29€. Open every day from 10.00 to 19:00.

What to do in Madeira with Kids (Outside of Funchal)

But you didn’t come to Madeira to spend the whole time in Funchal, did you? So here are a few family days you can plan outside of Funchal:

Spend a day in Calheta or Machico

Kids love to play in the sand. So, if you’re coming to Madeira, I’d recommend wither the beach at Calheta or the beach in Machico. Both have artificial sand and seawalls that practically remove currents, so they’re usually safe and welcoming.

While they wait to get on the water – I’d imagine you want to wait at least an hour or two after eating – they can enjoy the boat-shaped playgrounds. There’s one in Calheta right by the beach, and another one in Machico near the fort.

If you’re travelling with kids during the holidays, this is a perfect beach day opportunity. Of course, don’t forget to check the webcams to see where the weather looks sunnier.

Explore Ribeiro Frio and the Balcões

Madeira is well-known for its levadas and hikes. Now, there are not many levadas I’d recommend to children. However, you don’t want to miss out on that, and your kids will enjoy venturing into the “jungle”, as some people describe the central mountain range.

If you only do one short walk with kids, make it Balcões. Yes, it tends to be very crowded these days, but it is the best option with kids. It will give you a little taste of what a levada is like, with small waterfalls on the side, greenery, and a great view at the end.

It’s the rare Madeira outing that delivers big scenery for very little effort. Besides, you can also see the trouts in Ribeiro Frio, have a family picnic, and call it day. Otherwise, if the kids are still energetic, you can continue on to Santana. It’s really one of the Madeira’s prettiest roads.

Have a Kid day at Parque Temático da Madeira

Okay, I’ve said before that the Parque Temático da Madeira is a little bit of a tourist trap. And it is. You can’t really explain all the rich culture and traditions in a theme park. But, if you’re travelling to Madeira with kids, they are probably going to love it.

The park has a fake ethnographic village with typical Santana houses, arts and crafts, and other outdoor attractions. In my experience, kids love to explore the little houses and get on a boat at the lake. Plus, there’s also a small train that goes around the park and a children’s playground (again, also shaped like a boat).

It’s open 10:00–18:00 and closes on Mondays, so it’s a nice weekend plan. And the best part? The garden is completely free for kids up to 14 years old. You only need to pay for specific activities (like the boat or the train, 3.5€ each) or buy an all inclusive ticket (3€ or 9€, depending of the kids’ ages).

Swim at the Porto Moniz natural pools

No holiday is complete with a splash day. And when in Madeira… you must visit the natural pools in Porto Moniz. This is one of my favourite spots on the island, and I’ve yet to meet an adult or a child who isn’t amazed by them. It’s the type of thing they’ll remember it for years.

Again, it plays to the kids’ sense of adventure. However, if you’re swimming with kids, the newer Porto Moniz pools (entrance fee 3€) are safer than the older ones, with are deeper, unsupervised, and lack dressing rooms. Another tip: bring watershoes.

Try the Seixal beach in the Summer

Listen, no holiday is complete without a North coast day. But if your kids don’t take to the pools and prefer the beach, it’s never too late to head to Seixal. Seixal is a small, charming village with a tiny black-sand beach that’s gotten really popular in the last few years.

Obviously, being the North coast, the water temperature tends to me somewhat lower. So this is a better plan in the Summer months, from June onwards. On your trip back, you can stop in São Vicente to stretch your legs. There’s a playground there with a little fort too.

Bonus: Visit Porto Santo

If you’ve got more than a week, Porto Santo can be a great kid-friendly add-on. The sea is usually calm, especially when the tide is low, there’s plenty of space to play at the beach, and it’s extremely safe. But make sure to give them some vomidrine before the trip!

Walk the levadas while everything’s still ridiculously green

Back in January and February, I recommended sticking to a few wide levadas without much elevation. However, March could be the right time to explore other routes. After the generous rain at the beginning of the year, the mountains are green, luscious and, dare I say, jungle-like.

Levadas like Caldeirão Verde look extra lush and theatrical, with mossy walls, behemoth trees, small waterfalls, and that fresh, clean air you only get in the untouched laurissilva. Other popular levadas, like Levada do Rabaçal and 25 Fontes, are also on the cards again.

Plus it’s not peak season yet, which means you can enjoy the trails without feeling like you’ve joined a school trip. If you want to explore the path less travelled, Levada do Rei is a solid, easy-going pick. Levada dos Cedros also brilliant for that misty Fanal atmosphere.

Go Dolphin and whale watching

By March, the worst Atlantic tantrums are usually behind us. We’ve had our fair share of storms this year, but the ocean finally seems to have calmed down. Boats are going out almost every day from Funchal’s pier: you can either show up there or buy your tickets here.

I always recommend spending a day at sea to rest your legs from all the walking and hiking. Plus, the ocean is as big a part of Madeira as the mountains. In fact, if anything, it’s more untouched. You can truly witness nature in action when you’re on the water.

Dive in Garajau or explore a sunken ship

If you don’t love the idea of hopping on a boat, you can always try diving or snorkeling. Depending on your level of expertise, there are several options. You can explore the marine life in shallow waters at Garajau’s Natural Reserve or take a deeper dive to a sunken ship practically below Cabo Girão.

Hop on Santa Maria do Colombo

Speaking of ships, you can also hop into Santa Maria do Colombo to get a feel of what caravels were like during the Age of Discovery. And if that sails your boat, you can also visit the Madeira Story Centre in Funchal. The museum offers an interactive display of what life was like in the old days.

Attend the Madeira Music Festival For an Evening

March also has that “culture is back on the calendar” energy, and the Madeira Music Festival is the neatest example of it. The XXXIX (that’s 39th) edition runs from 7 to 28 March, with concerts across different venues, so it’s likely you can catch at least one of those if you’re coming to Madeira in March.

Even if you’re not normally a classical-music person, I’d urge you to try. You can have an early dinner, attend a concert at a local venue, support local musicians, and take a gentle stroll afterwards. Besides, you’re supposed to try things you don’t usually do on holidays, isn’t that right?

Experience Festa da Anona in Faial: your last call for cherimoya season

Cherimoyas are one of my favourite tropical fruits in Madeira. The texture is creamy, and the flavour tastes like a mix of banana and pineapple, mixed with a hint of vanilla bean. When ripe, it’s incredibly sweet. However they’re a Winter fruit, and March is one of the last opportunities to try them.

If you want to try them, head to Exposição Regional da Anona (Regional Cherimoya Exhibition) in Faial from February 28th to March 1st. It’s a lively party that will give you a local taste in more ways than one. Besides cherimoyas, there will be liqueurs, puddings, ice cream, smoothies, traditional music, and folk dances. It’s a lively event.

Try to Experience Funchal like a local

If there’s a day when the weather’s a bit undecided, or you’re feeling tired, I suggest trying to experience Funchal like a local. Go to the market, have a traditional lunch (something with milho ou molho vilão), do some shopping. Perhaps spend the afternoon at the Lido pool or play tennis at Jardim da Magnólia.

Then, finish you day with a brisa or ice cream by the beach. These are the little things you’re going to remember when you go back home!

Why did Madeirans go to Hawaii?

On the 30th of September of 1878, the ship Priscilla arrived with a group of Portuguese migrants from Madeira. That voyage is usually treated as the start of mass Portuguese migration to the islands, and it wasn’t random. It was organised recruitment: plantation owners and local government wanted to recruit workers of European descent.

At that time, Hawaii’s sugar industry was in need of labourers. The Native Hawaiian population had been devastated by diseases. Chinese workers were brought on, and made up almost 10% of the population in 1878. However, they consisted mostly of single men who’d return home, back to California or Honolulu at the end of their contracts.

Besides, these men were often accused of gambling, prostitution, and opium use by other groups. King Kalakaua then decided to often incentives to non-Asian groups, preferably those of European descent, to work on cane fields. But who would be up to the task? Who would accept such conditions and adapt to living in the relative isolation of the Hawaiian island?

A Portuguese settler suggested migrants from Madeira and the Azores, because they already knew sugar work. At the same time, Madeirans were in a dire situation. The island’s sugar rush era was long gone. And wine, who had replaced it, was affected by two consecutive plagues. In 1877, production was at its lowest.

So, it wasn’t just that they knew sugar work. They were also desperate, poor, mostly illiterate (85.6% of Madeirans didn’t know how to read or write in 1890), and used to living on islands.

What did Madeirans do in Hawaii?

The voyage to Hawaii was arduous and perilous. The Madeirans travelled by boat for 3 to 4 months in cramped quarters. The unsanitary conditions meant illnesses would often become rampant on board, and there were several outbreaks of smallpox. In more than one voyage, several children passed away.

Once in Hawaii, they were subjected to indenture-style contracts, working 10 hours, 6 days a week, for a minimum of three years. It wasn’t until Hawaii joined the US that the courts abolished this contract system and workers could leave at any time. Plantations should provide housing and minimum assistance.

The work at the sugar plantations was backbreaking, low-status, and tightly controlled. In fact, workers could be punished for a “breach” of contract if they missed work or tried to find a better position. Some contemporary authors put it just one step above slavery.

Portuguese workers were also considered “caucasian, but not white”. This meant there were paid less than whites, yet still remained higher on the plantation hierarchy than other groups. These racial lines were a tactic to prevent workers from joining forces and rebelling.

Another tactic was to house workers according to their ethnic groups. Portuguese families were housed together at camps, where they were free to bake their own bread and cook their traditional food. Obviously, housing conditions varied, but most only had dirt floors that turned into mud.

How did Madeiran Traditions Survive in Hawaii?

Many Portuguese came as families, not just single men. Families were seen as more likely to stay put, to build a community, and to settle into plantation life rather than treat the contract as a temporary stint. For plantation owners, stability was a form of control: fewer people returning to their countries or jumping ship to other work.

For the migrants themselves, family migration also created something durable. Most immigrants could not read or write, but their traditions survived through oral history. There was a strong sense of community where religious rites, food, festivities and folklore survived.

Portuguese families were also quite big. Families had 4 to 12 children, which means the community continued to prosper for generations. And while many left for California due to Hawaii’s poor working conditions, the population remained high in the early 20th century.

Later on, because of the high intermarriage rate between the Portuguese and other ethnic groups, including natives, their traditions became woven into the fabric of Hawaii.

The origin of the malasadas

That’s why Hawaii has malasadas, sweet bread, and ukeleles. Malasadas, for example, are unique to Madeira and the Azores. The closest food cousin on the mainland are sonhos, traditionally eaten during Christmas time. But fried malasadas are eaten with sugar for Carnaval (Fat Tuesday/ Mardi Gras), right before Lent.

So, if Hawaii has malasadas today, it’s because migrants kept both their food and religious traditions. Of course, it helped that they could find all the ingredients in Hawaii!

The Ukelele is related to the Rajão

The ukelele, on the other hand, descends directly from Portuguese instruments. A lot of people compare it to the cavaquinho, which is similar. However, there’s also the lesser known “rajão”, a unique Madeiran instrument that is used on traditional folk songs. It’s so unknown that not even mainlanders will recognise it.

Yet it crossed two oceans with the Madeiran workers who went to Hawaii. There, three Madeiran cabinet makers improved it and made what’s considered the first ukelele in 1879. These three men were Manuel Nunes, Augusto Dias, and José do Espírito Santo.

The takeaway

Whenever I hear someone mention the “Portuguese in Hawai‘i”, I always want to add: yes, almost exclusively islanders. Not the postcard version of islands, either. The working version. The one where people left because the economy collapsed, and accepted backbreaking labour.

Yet they still found ways to sing, cook, celebrate, and raise families who keep those things going. So the next time you bite into a malasada or hear a ukulele on a beach, remember there’s a whole ocean of history behind it. It’s not just heritage. It’s endurance turned into culture: the way Madeirans have always done.

1. Pack layers

Tourists often come to Madeira expecting sun all year round. Maybe it’s because Madeira is being sold as the “Hawaii in Europe”. However, the weather in Madeira can change in a heartbeat: it could be sunny in the morning and midsty in the afternoon. Or vice-versa.

Besides changing around the day, you also need to take into consideration how temperature shifts as you go to higher altitudes. Although the weather may be 20ºC for Funchal, that’s certainly near the ocean. If you go to Monte, it will be cooler.

Adding to that, weather predictions can’t be always trusted either. Ever since I moved to Madeira, I’ve noticed that both the temperatures and the hourly rain predictions tend to be off – and it’s even worse in Porto Santo. So, you need to take all of this into consideration when you pack.

My biggest tip is to pack layers for different types of weather. Do not based yourself on weather predictions and don’t be caught off guard if it drizzles. At any given time, you’ll probably need a t-shirt, a sweater, and a rain jacket. If you’re hiking, here’s my “must” packing list for Madeira.

2. Check the webcams

As said, the weather in Madeira changes quickly. But it also changes a lot from place to place. I can’t tell you how many times we left sunny Funchal to encounter a windy Caniço, or left a rainy airport to then reach a sunny Ponta do Sol. There are a number of microclimates on the island.

So how are you supposed to manage this on your holidays? Simple. Check the webcams. There are webcams throughout the island, allowing you to see what the weather is like all around. Then, decide where to go. That’s why it’s so important to remain flexible about what to do and where to go.

3. Mind the tourist traps

Madeira is a highly touristic place and, of course, it’s not immune to tourist traps. The most well-known one is Mercado dos Lavradores, although that’s a double edged sword. On one hand, no visit to Funchal is complete without going to the Farmer’s Market. On another hand, you need to mind the prices to avoid being scammed.

One of my best tips before coming to Madeira is to check what’s in season. Things are in season are likely cheaper and sourced locally. 4. Do not come for pastéis de nata

Madeira is not Portugal. I mean, it is, but is has its own identity. Pastéis de Nata (also known as Pastéis de Belém) are traditional from Lisbon. Although you can find them throughout the country – and Madeira now has a chain store Nata 7 – this isn’t the place to try them or look for a workshop to learn how to make them.

There’s so much local cuisine to uncover. Look for bolo do caco (a flatbread with sweet potato), pão de casa (also with sweet potato), bolo de noiva (a sweet bread), milho frito (fried cornmeal), poncha (the local cocktail), tomato soup, tuna or scabbard fish, lapas (limpets), espetada (beef skewers) or picado (a shareable dish).

If you have a sweet tooth, you have the aforementioned tropical fruits and honey cake, which is actually prepared with sugar cane syrup and not bee honey. Then you have multiple cookies, bolo preto, and bolo Fidalfédia. You can find these are local cafés, smaller supermarkets and bakeries.

5. Respect the environment

I say “respect the environment” because I don’t want to write a heading saying “bring a rubbish bag”. But seriously, do! So many people go on hikes and leave toilet paper and toiletteries behind. In fact, I’ve covered this before on the 7 commandements to be a respectful tourist in Madeira.

If you’re going on hikes, pack some wipes, a bag, and make sure not to leave anything behind. If you’re on the beach, don’t leave bottles on the rocks. If you’re making a picnic at the mountains, make sure napkins are not flying with the wind. In other words, leave nature just like you found it.

6. Consider renting a car

Another tip if you’re coming to Madeira is renting a car. Although the island looks small on the map, public transportation is lacking. If you want to go outside of Funchal – and I really urge you to go – renting a car is the best way to discover other parts of the island. That said, traffic has really gotten out of control these last few years.

So what’s my advice? Plan your route really well so that you only need to rent the car for a couple of days. In my itinerary, you only need to rent a car for 2 to 3 days to enjoy your week. Besides, I also give you some alternatives for daytrips using public transportation or recognised tour guides.

If you don’t drive, you need to be a little more careful planning your days. You’ll need to spend some money to get the best tours (don’t get on a bus with 50 other people) – but hey, renting a car costs money too. Just spend some time exploring your options and, extra tip, book early!

7. Embrace the festivals

No matter the time of the year, chances are there will be an arraial (let’s say, local celebrations or festivals) on the island. In March, there was the cherimoya festival in Faial. In April, we’ll have Festa do Limão in Santana. And that’s only an example! Every month, I do a roundup of things to do and there’s always one.

These festivities are an opportunity to look into local culture for real. There will be music, there will be food, there will be proper bolo do caco (not the tourist traps you’ll find in Funchal!), there’s food (usually sandwiches and espetadas), and drinks. Poncha is nonnegotiable, but be careful if you’re going to drive afterward.

8. Remember that Uber works too

When you come to Madeira, you’ll see local taxis everywhere. They are bright yellow with a blue stripe, and called “abelhinhas” (little bees) by locals. Taxis are a very convenient way to move around: you can take a bus to a smaller town and then use a taxi to get to the levada, for example.

But another tip you must know before coming to Madeira is that Uber works too. Well, Bolt works better. But the point is these types of apps work here, and cars must be signalled as TVDE. And this is a very good tip because trips from the airport to Funchal (or elsewhere on the island) are significantly cheaper using TVDE than a taxi.

One thing, though, is that Uber and Bolt tend to work better if you’re making a trip within Funchal or departing from Funchal. In smaller towns, there may not be Ubers available or you may have longer wait times. But it’s worth a try! I’ve covered this subject a little better on my article “Does Uber work in Madeira?”.

9. Take tours early on your Trip

As I’ve said before, there are several Madeiras within Madeira. The South and North coasts look very different from one another. And because different people like different things, it’s impossible to predict what will resonate with you better. Therefore, I’d recommend taking trips early on your trip.

In my one week itinerary, I suggest a slow first day to get acclimated. Then, you can start exploring the island. Doing this earlier on your trip allows you to decide where you want to spend your last day on the island – or even go back to your favourite spots.

10. Do not use google maps blindly

And never, never use Apple Maps. You may be used to following Google Maps almost blindly when you travel. Well, not in Madeira. There are two problems with these maps: first, some of directions are wrong. When I first moved, Google Maps took me into a one-direction street… on the wrong direction.

But that’s not the worst part. Google Maps often looks for the “quickest” road. It will suggest you to turn on veredas, go through streets with 30ºC inclination, and so on, simplt because it saves you a few meters. It doesn’t take into account how hard it is to drive in some of those settings. It gets worse in rural areas, but it has let me down in Funchal too.

The golden tip for those coming to Madeira is to stick to main roads: Via Rápida, Via Expresso and roads marked as ER. Use your good sense and follow the locals. If you can, look up your route for the next day at night with street view. And of course, drive slowly and carefully.

The island may be small, but yet there are many Madeiras. In a week, you can see many of them: the old town of Funchal, the gardens, the levadas, the agricultural areas, and the cinematic north coast.

But it’s important to say upfront: you will not see everything. You won’t cover every single corner of the island like it’s the palm of your hand. You may not get to go to everywhere you’ve seen on TikTok.

My best advice for people coming to Madeira is not to make it into a bucketlist chase. Otherwise, you’ll spend the whole week in your car, without fully appreciating nature, food, or the culture.

What to expect from one week in Madeira

While Madeira is small on a map, but it doesn’t behave like it. I remember being at a viewpoint during a hike – I could see Pico do Areeiro, Porto da Cruz, Ponta de S. Lourenço and Porto Santo from the same place. It’s never looked so small to me.

And yet, if you were to go to all of these places by car, it would take you a little while. It doesn’t feel as close. And then there’s the weather, which can change from place to place: the island has over 40 microclimates. So you need to be flexible and adjust.



Here’s what to expect from one week in Madeira, realistically:

Cover the highlights and a couple of your favourites

A week in Madeira is enough to cover the classics. I have an itinerary for one week in Madeira, which covers one day to wind down in Funchal, one day visiting gardens, another day venturing further into the island, a fourth day on the North coast, and two days for activities of your choosing.

On those two days, you can throw in a number of activities of your choosing, such a hiking levada, visiting Ponta de S. Lourenço, diving in the Atlantic, and much more. Granted, it’ll be an intense week, but it will give you a real feel for the island.

Enjoy outdoor activities at the Heart of the Island

One week in Madeira is also enough if you’re coming to the island for something very specific. If you want to hike several levadas, try canyoning, paragliding, BTT and other outdoor activities at central mountain range of the island, it’ll be a thrilling week.

However, let’s not forget you’re on holiday. Levadas, as lovely as they are, are also quite tiring. I’d recommend 4-5 active days at most, and then take 2-3 days to rest. Slot in a slow Funchal day, a dolphin watching tour or a visit to the North Coast. That’s the difference between feeling pleasantly tired and feeling like you’ve been folded into a suitcase.

Make plenty of Family-friendly Plans

Let’s be honest about group travelling. It’s great to spend time with your loved ones, but everyone has different interests. One week in Madeira is ideal, because there are plenty of family-friendly plans: boat trips, 4 x 4 tours, natural pools, interactive museums, and delicious meals.

But after a week, people will start to drift in different directions. Some will want to explore the mountains and the levadas, while others will prefer sunbathing and swimming. So one week seems to be the sweet spot to try different things every day and create lovely memories. No one will feel dragged around!

Visit Madeira as a part of a larger Portugal trip

So many people spend 3 days in Porto, 3 days in Lisbon, 3 days in the Algarve, 3 days in Madeira or in the Azores. When they come to the island, they’re already tired – and find it surprising that a couple of days is not enough to cover a lot of ground.

If that’s your case, remember that an island is not like a city. A week is enough time to rest from the previous days and the flight, as well as enjoying the island itself. You can have a slow day, enjoy a nice meal by the ocean, hike, swim, and visit different parts of the island.

Madeira tends to punish random driving and rewards smart sequencing. A good one-week plan clusters areas and uses the microclimates to your advantage. And it always includes a Plan B, because the clouds do not care about your schedule.

When is a week in Madeira NOT Enough?

Like I said, Madeira may look small on the map, but there are plenty of things to do and see. A week is not enough if you want to cover a lot of ground slowly and thoroughly. I’d recommend staying for 10 days or even 2 weeks if that’s your goal.

It’s also not enough if you want to do plus multiple big hikes. In that case, counting with a few rest days, you should also aim to stay 10 days at least. Otherwise, if staying a week, I’d recommend making 4 levadas at most.

Lastly, one week is not enough if you also intend to visit Porto Santo. Although technically possible, you won’t get to see either island really well. Porto Santo deserves more than a daytrip.

Staying for over a week will allow you to visit Madeira without sacrificing rest or turning every day into a rush. Besides, longer trips give you more flexibility to wait for the right day for the peaks or the sea.

Yet, the next day they were feeling tired. And that’s honestly more than a lot of people manage. I’ve met tourists who were tired after a single dau of walking up and down in Funchal.

If the ocean is calm, dolphin and whale watching is one of the best activities you can engage in. You only have to show up at Funchal’s Marina, get on a boat, sit and enjoy the views. Very relaxing, and not much effort or movement at all.

For those of you who don’t love high waters, you can try to dive and snorkel at Garajau, which is a Nature Reserve. Of course, this requires a little more energy that hopping on a boat to see the dolphins. But it’s equally rewarding!

Have a Spa Day and Afternoon Tea in Funchal

When you’re really tired, there’s nothing quite like a spa day to get your groove back. A lot of hotels in Funchal allow non-guests to book a spa day, and you can also have a massage. In fact, this is also a great plan for a rainy day in Madeira.

In the same slow, relaxing day vein, you can have afternoon tea at several of the city’s cafés. Afternoon tea at Reid’s is a classic option, but there’s also Loja do Chá downtown, Choux in front of the Municipal Gardens, or Monte Tea House in Monte.

Head for a picnic in the Mountains

Madeira has accessible parks and picnic areas all across the island. This means that, as long as you’re not too tired to drive, you can still smell the forest and enjoy the views – without any hiking or effort.

Just pick up some bolo do caco, fruit, pastries, maybe some cheese, and drive up. Eat slowly and take it all in, as locals do. If you need help, here are a few picnic areas where you can find tables, benches, and even bathrooms.

Swim at Madeira’s Lava Pools or Beaches

I’m not suggesting swimming laps or diving. Just being the water, relaxing and floating, will be enough to help you recover from your hikes. Plus, the cold water is beneficial to muscle recovery.

The Porto Moniz natural lava pools are one of the most scenic spots for a swim. If you prefer something quieter, try the Seixal natural pools. Finally, if you’re tired of moving and driving around, try Doca do Cavacas in Funchal.

As for beaches, I recommend Barreirinha in Funchal, Prainha in Caniçal, Ponta do Sol and many others around the island. If you want more ideas, check out my list of the best beaches in Madeira.

Take a Cable car to Otherwise Unaccessible Areas

Some of Madeira’s most interesting spots are places locals also don’t walk to. There are several places on the island that are only accessible by cable car or boat, so it’s perfect for tired hikers.

The cable car to Achadas da Cruz is dramatic, breathtaking two minute thrill ride. But, once you’re down, it’s flat and peaceful. You feel like nothing bad could happen in this world.

Then there’s the cable car to Fajã dos Padres. That’s another favourite with gardens, vineyards, and a restaurant serving food grown right there. You’ll spend a tranquil day by the sea without hiking.

Taste Typical Madeiran Food

From Michelin-starred restaurants to very honest, family-run establishments, it’s hard to leave Madeira hungry. Which is why I’m suggesting you take the time to properly sit down and enjoy a meal.

If you’re an omnivore, have some grilled espada with potatoes and veggies (ditch the espada with banana and the passion fruit). Or you could try some milho frito, which is the world’s 8th wonder.

Besides espada (swordfish), there’s also atum com molho vilão: that’s tuna with an onion and garlic-forward sauce. Lapas, although they’re forbidden this year. And octopus, especially if you’re staying in Porto Santo.

In terms of meat, you have the ever-present skewers with laurel, as well as the picado with fries (meat pieces in sauce, meant to be a shareable dish). Not to mention sopa de trigo, pão de casa, bolo do caco, tremoços and, of course, Brisa Maracujá.

Visit Cabo Girão Viewpoint and Câmara de Lobos

Cabo Girão is the most famous viewpoint on the island, and it’s very easy to reach. If you’re staying in Funchal, it’s only a short ride away. I’d pair it with a visit to Câmara de Lobos, where you can sit down for a drink.

Take a pottery Workshop (and Make a Souvenir)

If you want to do something creative to relax, there are pottery workshops in Funchal’s old town. Plus, you can take your piece home, which makes for a pretty unique souvenir.

Learn How to make bolo de mel

Bolo de mel isn’t honey cake. Even though we call it “mel de cana” (mel being the Portuguese word for honey), it’s really sugar cane syrup, similar to molasses. Paired with spices, it has a deep, caramilised flavour.

This is genuinely traditional and unique to Madeira – unlike, say pastéis de nata, which hail from Lisbon. So, instead of taking a pastel de nata workshop, try to learn how to make bolo de mel.

Sail on the Santa Maria de Colombo

This replica of Columbus’ ship takes you on a trip to the past. Like the dolphin and whale watching boat, it departs every day from Funchal’s pier, unless the ocean is choppy and the weather doesn’t allow it.
